AMD lifts embargo on Radeon RX 460 and RX 470 - Official Specs

As most of you guys know, AMD will release the Radeon RX 470 on August 4th followed by the RX 460 on th 8th. The complete specs can now be shared for publication. In this post an overview.

Like the Radeon RX 480, the RX 470 is based on the Polaris 10 GPU, in this ASIC however there are four compute units disabled totalling to 2048 instead of 2304 stream processors. In addition, the RX 470 has a lower clock rate of 926 MHz with a boost to 1206 MHz. Also, the memory is clocked slower at a rate of 1650Gbit/s.

The RX 470 features 4GB and alternatively (depends on AIB partner choices) of GDDR5 memory and a 256bit memory bus. According to AMD is the use of the card at 120W.

 RX 480RX 470RX 460
Codename Polaris 10 (14nm) Polaris 10 (14nm) Polaris 11 (14nm)
Compute units 36  32 14
Stream processors 2304  2048  896
Clock/boost 1120/1266MHz  926/1206MHz  1090/1200MHz
Mem 4/8GB gddr5  4GB gddr5  2/4GB gddr5
Mem bus 256bit 256bit  128bit
Bandwidth mem 256GB/s 211GB/s 112GB/s
TDP 150W 120W <75W

The Radeon RX 460 AMD uses a much smaller GPU, Polaris Polaris 11. Like 10, this is fabbed on a 14nm FinFET process . The GPU has 896 stream processors, 48 tmu and 16 rops . The clock speed is 1090MHz with a boost to 1200MHz. There are variants with 2GB or 4GB GDDR5 memory, clocked at 1750Gbit/s. 128-bit memory bus is used. The video card should consume less than 75W , no PCIe power connector is present . The slides to show that the RX 460 also appears in laptops.

With the information embargo lifted I have made an overview of the most important slides as presented by AMD.

RX480 seems a refurbished R9 290, it's about the same framerate in every game, just a little bit better.

I think AMD is not doing a good job if they are only repeating the same products over and over, year after year. Providing only minor changes in performance or better power requirements for the same performance. Sure, it's cheap... of course it is!!!

The low-mid class of nvidia (1060) equals the top class of AMD next-gen (480)? come on AMD... you can do better... you NEED to do better...

I had 2 x R9 290 in crossfire, and, after several years supporting AMD with many GPU models, I recently changed to a single 1080 GTX. AMD needs to work hard to regain the lost crown.

The 480 is the mid-range card and it goes against the 1060 (that is mid-range too, not low). The top card is called Vega and will be launched in 2017.

Pretty sure these will sell like hot cakes, low-mid range cards are always the bestsellers.

Still, I too want to see the higher end cards already, I just hope they will still come out sometime this year, next year is simply too late.

Between 960 and 970. As you can see specs wise is very close to 480. I would assume 10-15% slower than 480.

I'm glad to hear that (anything with 4gb of vram over my silly 760) unless of course I can buy a dirt cheap 970 from one of my friends.
