AMD surpassed Intels market share in desktop processors

Read it well, desktop, and not notebook. But yeah that something very interesting is happing you've been able to witness for the past three years now.

AMD surpassed Intel in terms of market share desktop processors, the data however is limited and based on published results from PassMark. PassMark Software's benchmarking results for the first quarter of 2021 show that AMD took a 50.8% share of the global desktop CPU market, leaving Intel at 49.2%.

The last time the AMD had taken the lead was in the first quarter of 2006, although that only lasted a quarter.

When you combine all results on all segments, Intel has a clear lead, but certainly, the trend has shifted. 62% for Intel, and 38% for AMD.

Things are different in the notebook segment, Intel here still leads with a huge 84% share, AMD thus at 16%. The difference is even more pronounced in the server segment, where Intel has 98.6%, while AMD takes the remaining 1.4%. However, with EPYC, that number might change fast as well.

Of course, the numbers are limited by demographic, as they are solely based on PassMark entries. Would you look at the gamer side of things and compare with Steam results, for example, the difference would be just that, very different.

1) the i-9
concept is/was a failure you cannot charge for that extra sumptin' sumptin' without extra performance. AMD slaughters them with 3 sku's here

2) the Paris Accords
Intel is effectively playing from behind in every data center/ cloud storage market in Europe for power efficiency alone, plus the force multiplier of more threads.
In the U.S. the same, but mainly for a lower cost of operation that is AMD's advantage (to keep the term "global warming" from stockholders lol)
Epyc and (industrial) Big Navi rule here and will for the foreseeable future. which will be cut into by Nvidia starting next year before Intel has a datacenter answer. Yes ARM is not the same as x86, but it can do enough to gobble up the low-hanging fruit that Intel depends on and we all know about ARM's power efficiency.

3) mobile computing
this is the strongest suit for Intel, hell i'm writing this on an Intel/Nvidia lappy right now.
but especially for (non pro) gamers there is a pent up demand for an all AMD solution.
the good news is TSMC and Samsung are taking that delicious Apple $$ and are reinvesting it in their foundries for expansion. which benefits both AMD and Nvidia, but AMD 1st.
the Ryzen 3 wasn't made for mobile, but it's already better than the Intel alternative. the Ryzen 3 made for mobile this coming year will finally be that all AMD solution.
give that a year and then we'll check Intel's number. Note: OMFG the Apple M1

4) poor baby
yeah it was such a good decision to ditch the phone market...

long story short, it was the ARM money (plus wise investors) that paid for the progress in node shrinkage. we love it on x86
