AMD announced the FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.1 (FSR 2.1) late Thursday, improving the performance-quality advantages of FSR 2.0 while increasing visual integrity and addressing various types of visible upscaling errors.

Initially, it addressed ghosting difficulties caused by geometry carrying motion vectors that did not match the underlying pixel colors, resulting in a "shimmering" look. Changes to the disocclusion logic allow it to identify disocclusions in regions with minimal depth separating objects, which should help with ghosting problems.

AMD claims to have tweaked the FidelityFX Super Resolution algorithm, which implies that the picture quality of games that employ this upscaling technology should increase even more. AMD claims that version 2.1 will decrease ghosting on both conventional and translucent geometry.

Digital Foundry compared FSR 2.0 to Nvidia DLSS in the PC version of God of War in early June. Both approaches are supported by this game. Then DLSS was favoured because it produced less graphic artifacts. Deathloop was the first game to acquire FSR 2.0 support in May. By the end of June, 24 games have been announced or published with FSR 2.0 support. AMD has made the technology's source code accessible in order to guarantee that as many game developers as possible may use it in their games.
