AMD seems to be developing Nintendo NX APU

AMD seems to be developing Nintendo NX APU

After Microsoft and Sony, AMD found a new client for custom APUs. AMD develops these custom APUs for Sony's PS4 en Microsoft's Xbox One already.

In this case it'll be a "semi-custom" chip for a game console, very likely this will be the NX from Nintendo. AMD started last quarter with the development of the semi-custom APU which is developed based on very specific wishes from the client. AMD CEO Lisa Su stated that she expects a solid year for the revenue created from game-console chips, which gives AMD an opportunity to grow in the 2nd half of the year. So, chances are high this all refers to the NX from Nintendo, a x86-apu based game console. The combination of a processor and GPU delivers much advantages for Nintendo.

AMD classifies the APU developed as  “semi-custom.” Accelerated processing units (APU) chips combine a central processing unit (CPU) and graphics processing unit (GPU) on a single chip. Nintendo has already made the jump from IBM’s PowerPC to x86-based (AMD and Intel) architecture. That means that games written for Nintendo’s current Wii U console will be x86 compatible. It would make sense for Nintendo to continue its relationship with AMD and continue to use x86 architecture in its next-generation design, which Nintendo announced would be called the NX.

Nintendo’s upcoming codenamed NX video game console, is expected to launch in 2016.

I wish Nintendo would return to form, something with some actual power behind it. Like I get that their games are more focused on younger generation and stuff, but the console should at least be able to play current AAA titles. They can't ride the Wii/Wii U gimmick forever.

Launch 2016, so maybe we'll see 14nm + HBM there.
That would make very power efficient device. Those 4 HBM chips which are on Fury X eat virtually nothing on 500MHz. (They do not downclock when there is no load, at least not externally.)

May be nice handheld thingy.

Or they could also go for a very cheap console that ppl from other than rich countries could actually afford ?
ill show u what i mean, what i have to spend on a console:

it costs me 1118$ for Nintendo Wii U Premium Black The Legend of Zeldalda
or
1699$ for Sony Playstation 4 500GB + Grand Theft Auto V

or just sell my GPU for 500$ and buy a new one for 720$ and spend the rest of the cash on games...

that is the world for ppl wanting to play on a console - just too expensive and games my god: PS4 AAA titles goes for 329$ and PC like 150$
we do not complain much but man, so many without internet

would u like an EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Superclocked ? 2389$
in this world - there would be a million dollar line in the front of a 1 shop if wii u was for 300$ and games for 10-30

It's a shame the WII U hasn't sold well, as it offers something totally different from the competition. If you only play on PC then it is a great console to own, as most aren't released on PC so you get to play something different :)

I want one badly, but no go 1-2 year bank loan, if it was 1 year i would not be able to buy games, 2 year would mean i would buy a game occasionally but no cinema, no fast food, pretty much no to everything else
