AMD Ryzen Threadripper procs will offer a lot of bang for buck

Earlier today AMD announced the two launch Ryzen Threadripper processor, the 12c/24t 1920X and 16c/32t 1950X. The processors, despite its enthusiast price level, are going to offer terrific value. And let me show you how that works out.

Some of you might have noticed that in our latest articles we have included a mathematical plot that shows the value for money relative to the Cinebench 15 (multi-threaded)  score. E.g. how many cents wil it cost to calculate 1 CB. AMD Ryzen has been dominating that chart. And with the announcement video, AMD also has shared the CB15 scores. There’s a number of things we need to keep in mind:

  1. We do not know how expensive X399 motherboards will be. But we do expect them to be at X299 level in the 300 to 400 USD range.
  2. We only have Threadripper prices in USD available based on msrp, that might change a bit with street-prices and Euro conversions.

But for brevity's sake let's continue. This plot below shows that AMD definitely is charging a little more for this many core processor series compared  to Ryzen. However compared to Intel,  AMD simply is doing crazy things. And here is why:

So in the above a mathematical plot, we take the CB score from CineBench 15. We normalize the value and simply  plot how much money it takes to calculate that CB score. All processors are clocked at default frequencies, this plot would look different if you'd math in tweaked clock frequencies where you’d gain on higher CB scores. Also you need to take the number of CPU cores into account (as in what number of CPU cores is relevant for you). But this is very simple math, have a peek at the chart (the higher a CPU is positioned the better).

So what are you seeing?:

  • An 8 core Core i7 5960X costs 79 cents per calculated CB.
  • An 8 core Ryzen 7 1800X costs 25 cents per calculated CB.
  • A 10 core Core i9 7900X costs 42 cents per calculated CB.
  • A 12 or 16 core Ryzen Threadripper costs 36 cents per calculated CB.

Please let me iterate that this is a fairly subjective chart as it is based on just one test, but it does paint a certain picture. And please do not confuse the chart as to 'what is the better processor'. This chart merely shows what you could refer to as bang for buck.
