AMD today announced their ZEN3 architecture based processors for ultra-thin notebooks beginning with the Ryzen 7 5800U. New mobile 8-core 5800 and 5900HX series for gaming are announced as well.

AMD announced its Ryzen 5000 laptop processors with Zen 3 cores. There will be energy-friendly 5000U variants with a TDP of 15W and 5000HX variants with a TDP of 45W for gaming notebooks. Su mentioned the Ryzen 7 5800U; first, a Ryzen 5000 series mobile APU based on Zen 3 architecture intended for Ultra-thin products, and thus classed as a Cezanne chip.

The Ryzen 7 5800U 8-core part has sixteen threads to offer with a boost speed of up to 4.4GHz. AMD is also launching a new line of overclockable Ryzen 5000HX processors for gaming laptops. AMD adds a plus in the TDP in the slides, likely indicating a laptop manufacturer could further configure them to consume more or maintain higher clock speeds for a longer period of time. The Ryzen 9 5980HX is the flagship model with eight cores at a maximum of 4.8GHz. Ryzen 9 5900HX will also appear, clocked at 4.6GHz. Both HX processors have a 20MB L3 cache. The three announced procs all use the same Zen 3 cores as the Ryzen 5000 desktop 7nm processors released by AMD last year. In February, the first notebooks will become available already. More than 150 different laptop designs with Ryzen 5000 processors will be released this year mentions Su.

AMD Ryzen 5000 Series Mobile Processors

Topping out the mobile processor offering, the HX Series processors provide gamers and creators with elite-level performance while HS processors bring the power of H-Series in thinner and lighter form factors. The new AMD Ryzen 9 5980HX processor is capable of up to 23% increased single-threaded performance and up to 17% faster multi-threaded performance over the previous generation making it the ideal solution for gaming and creator notebooks.

For mainstream consumers looking for performance on-the-go, the AMD Ryzen 5000 U-Series Mobile Processors offer the perfect blend of performance and efficiency. The new AMD Ryzen 7 5800U processor offers:

  • Up to 16% more single-threaded performance and up to 14% faster multithreaded performance over the previous generation
  • Up to an incredible 17.5 hours of general usage battery life and up to 21 hours of movie playback on a single charge
AMD is also releasing Ryzen 5000U processors with Zen 2 cores:

Interesting to witness in the presentation (if you are an F1 fan) is that Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolf participate in an interview. AMD was sponsoring the team in 2020 (see photos). Lewis talks about Xbox and playing games (of course, on the latest AMD powered products) and the crazy amount of compute power needed in this industry from simulations towards wind tunnels and understanding data.

No new Radeon RX 6700 announcements have been made, BTW.
