AMD Radeon Pro 5600M Mobile GPU For 16-inch MacBook Pro (NAVI12 is here)

AMD Radeon Pro 5600M Mobile GPU For 16-inch MacBook Pro (NAVI12 is here)

A bit unexpectedly AMD announced the availability of the new Radeon Pro 5600M mobile GPU for the 16-inch MacBook Pro, which as it turns out is based on NAVI12 with two stacks of HBM2 memory.

So yes, a bit unexpected, but Navi12 has been released slash announced for MAC. As discussed before, this is a multi-chip module based on the 7nm GPU die and two 16 Gbit (4 GB per IC) HBM2 memory stacks. The maximum shader count of the GPU die on the "Navi 14" is not shared, but for this product we see 40 compute units amounting, and that's 2,560 shader processors, 160 TMUs, and likely 64 ROPs (unconfirmed).

The base clock of the card runs at 1035 MHz (peak but remember, mobile) with the HBM2 memory purring at 1.54 Gbps (2048-bit bus), so that's 394 GB/s of memory bandwidth.  The card would consume just 50 Watt. You're looking at a to be released PC mainstream GPU here folks, and I have to state that I am quite baffled to see HBM2 memory on there.

The AMD Radeon Pro 5600M GPU is built upon industry-leading 7nm process technology and advanced AMD RDNA™ architecture to power a diverse range of pro applications, including video editing, color grading, application development, game creation and more. With 40 compute units and 8GB of ultra-fast, low-power High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2), the AMD Radeon Pro 5600M GPU delivers superfast performance and excellent power efficiency in a single GPU package.

“More than ever, pro users require the freedom to create wherever their work takes them,” said Scott Herkelman, corporate vice president and general manager, Graphics Business Unit at AMD. “With AMD RDNA architecture, the AMD Radeon Pro 5600M GPU offers the optimal combination of compute horsepower and power efficiency, providing an outstanding mobile graphics solution to power a wide range of demanding workloads on-the-go.”

Key capabilities and features of the AMD Radeon Pro 5600M GPU include:

  • Exceptional compute performance – Equipped with 40 compute units, the AMD Radeon Pro 5600M GPU delivers up to 5.3 TFLOPS of single-precision (FP32) floating point performance.
  • HBM2 Memory – 8GB of HBM2 with 394 GB/s bandwidth provides ultra-fast transfer speeds to power data-intensive pro applications.
  • AMD RDNA architecture – AMD RDNA architecture delivers exceptional performance matched with remarkable power efficiency optimized for mobile computing platforms.

The new AMD Radeon Pro 5600M GPU adds a new super high-performance option to the existing Radeon Pro 5300M and 5500M GPU options for the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

What current products use HBM2? Could it be case of reduced demand bringing down the price per module. Thus making it more attractive even with the added cost of the interposer? Especially if AMD has existing tooling they can adapt.

Would love to start seeing AMD release big APU's with HBM modules, since APU's do struggle with normal ddr4 having some HBM memory or I guess if they really wanted to throw in some GDDR5/6 ram in there on the motherboard for people who want a nice sleek laptop but have a little monster inside for some light/mid gaming :) Always makes me sad when AMD release these chips to consoles but don't let PC touch them, then again maybe the market just isn't there for them
