AMD Radeon Fury X doesn't have HDMI 2.0 support

AMD Radeon Fury X doesn't have HDMI 2.0 support

So if you had a peek about all & everything presented in the past few days, one thing you will have noticed. The new architecture doesn't seem to offer support for HDMI 2.0, but instead still uses HDMI 1.4a. This means with Fury GPU based products, like the new project Quantum for example which really is a small form factor PC, you can't fully use it on an Ultra HD TV.

See, HDMI offer bandwidth support for 60hz, on 1.4a it'll drop back to a measly 30 Hz. A big miss if you ask me, HDMI 2.0 is the answer for products in the living room. Especially Nano and Project Quantum in mind, this might not have been the smartest move from the engineering team within AMD.

It's a bit of a thing for 4K gaming in the living room I'd say.

This question was answered by AMD Matt from our forums:

Q: Does the AMD Radeon R9 Fury X GPU have HDMI 2.0?
A: No. AMD recommends and uses DisplayPort 1.2a for 4K60 content.

Also, AMD lost $650-$1,300 by not including HDMI 2.0. If they don't want to support it, I won't support them. It's that simple.

I'd still check to see if their board partners release some Fury X models with HDMI 2 and possibly even DP1.3. Would give the company who does a nice edge to pull in some extra sales over the others.

I was wondering if perhaps for their reference designs AMD carried out the 5 year old plan to start phasing out DL DVI and as trying Hard to come in at a low price stuck with cheaper(?) HDMI 1.4 and DP1.2 as for most buyers this will be fine. While fully expecting their board partners to customise and add the newer connections.

Remember its only days now until we get some real reviews of the Fury cards - some time next week HH said, but not Monday ;)

The lack of HDMI 2.0 really puts the Fury Nano in an uncomfortable position. It could have been great competition as a Steam Machine or HTPC card against the GTX 970 ITX card that was reviewed here a while back.

Now, it lost a lot of momentum.

People keep saying that about the lack of HDMI 2.0, here's how I feel about it.

A. It does suck that they did not include HDMI 2.0 on the Fury X. As to why they did not, real reason I believe is that this product is more or less made as a proof of concept for AMD and will be perfected in the next release.

B. There are active Display Port 1.4a to HDMI 2.0 adapters out there that can handle the bandwidth just fine. If AMD were smart then they would include one.

C. There are plenty of other features that make this card a killer card. I won't let this affect my purchase. The low TDP gives me an opportunity to Crossfire them in my Mac Pro, then eventually in my new rig once I build it. Now I have to wait for Fury X to be released, and Kext support in Os X. :D

Wednesday 24th is the end of the NDA for the reviews.
