AMD Polaris (Radeon RX 400/500) users unable to play Forspoken
Despite the fact that the Nvidia 900 series can run Forspoken, the Polaris GPUs cannot due to their lack of DirectX 12 1 support. That means no support for AMD Radeon RX series 400 and 500.
According to Reddit users, the AMD Radeon RX 400 and RX 500 series graphics cards are unable to run the game Forspoken. It is suggested this is related towards certain DirectX 12 feature-level 12 1 API requirements of the game are not met by the Polaris architecture. AMD also has yet to release an update to its Adrenalin graphics drivers for the RX Vega, RX 5000, and RX 6000 series, which include Forspoken optimizations. Its most recent 23.1.2 beta drivers, which include these optimizations, only support RX 7000 series RDNA3 graphics cards.
The bulk of AMD graphics cards have now been without a driver update for almost 2 months.

I think its wise to keep in mind that while hawaii/fiji/polaris "only" makes the cut for full 12_0 compliance, they do support more than that, there are things they support that maxwell 2 does not, its easy to look in hindsight and say that it was a mistake, but I'm pretty sure that amd nor nvidia knew exactly what 12_1 was going to look like when they started developing their architectures.
also polaris is gfx8 archtecture like tonga/fiji, with some enhancements, which is an important detail ,since vega was supposed to be launched in 2016 and it includes 12_1, could be argued that polaris was a stopgap measure.
I'd wager you can probably play the game sub 1080p on low settings, probably wont be getting much more than 30 fps, but its probably "playable"

Is this just speculation because the game for some reason does not start, or is there actually an error message saying that it requires DX12_1? I have not seen any review or developer stating it requires DX12_1 either.

It is not speculation when the game doesn't start without forcing VKD3D-Proton to report FL 12_1 (which it doesn't do by default also on capable GPUs yet).

It sucks for those that already bought it on the hype...
... but in reality, nothing is lost by not playing this failure.
