The Phoenix Zen 4 lineup of mobile APUs from AMD is soon to hit the market, with the anticipated Ryzen 7000HS and H-series laptops due to make their appearance this month. Although the initial April launch was postponed, reviewers have managed to acquire preview hardware.
A content creator from Bilibili, a popular Chinese video platform, known as Golden Pig Upgrade, became the first to evaluate the AMD Ryzen 7040 Phoenix APUs. His benchmark tests revealed that the new Phoenix APU provides industry-leading performance in terms of graphics prowess. The 7840H with its Radeon 780M RDNA3 iGPU was put up against the Rembrandt-based 7735H and a duo of Intel Raptor Lake CPUs - the 13700H and 13500H models. The Radeon 780M integrated GPU is roughly on par with an NVIDIA GeForce MX550 dGPU and nears the benchmark performance of a GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q graphics card. However, the leap from the previous generation Rembrandt (RDNA2 iGPU) chip is not substantial.
The Ryzen 7040HS and 7040H series showcase analogous specifications, and AMD has yet to shed light on this overlap. The mobile Phoenix packages, now supporting AMD MIPI CSI, are depicted adjacent to each other. Laptop manufacturers have the discretion to choose the version that best complements their product, but the smaller FP7 package is probably more apt for compact and mobile devices. Neither the review nor AMD's website clarifies the difference between the 7000HS and 7000H series, with the 7940H and 7940HS seemingly being identical.
In comparative performance tests such as Cinebench R23, the AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS outperforms the Intel CPU by 8.5% at a 45W TDP, and offers a 5% performance advantage at a 55W TDP. To match the performance of the AMD chip, Intel's CPU must ramp up to a maximum TDP of 65W. A similar performance dynamic is observed between the Ryzen 7 7735HS and the Intel Core i5-13500H.
In terms of video playback, AMD Ryzen APUs demonstrate impressive power efficiency, consuming approximately 3.14W. This is significantly lower than the 5.23W consumed by the Core i5-13500H, showcasing the energy efficiency of AMD's offering.
The focus now shifts to the pricing of the first laptops equipped with the new AMD Ryzen 7040 Series APUs, a factor that will play a critical role in their market reception.
