AMD Offers Free ‘Boot Kit’ for Struggling Ryzen 3000 Owners

AMD Offers Free ‘Boot Kit’ for Struggling Ryzen 3000 Owners

The launch of Ryzen Generation3 has been positive overall. The processors are hard to get as they are in high demand. Some of you purchased one, installed is on a Series 300 or 400 motherboard but never updated the firmware. Another batch of you would have already sold their old processor.

In such a scenario, in the event that you purchased a Gen 3 CPU + Series 400 motherboard that had not received a firmware update end up into an in insolvable situation, as the PC would never boot. In such a scenario you can contact AMD as they are offering qualifying users the temporary loan of a free ‘boot kit’ to help them get their motherboards updated so that they will work. The kit includes an Athlon 200GE Processor, including thermal solution, for short-term use (“boot kit”) to perform the BIOS update on their motherboard.

This processor loan or boot kit is offered through AMD warranty services and is available for qualified users that a) have made a valid purchase of a 3rd Gen Ryzen Desktop Processor and b) are unable to boot that processor because the user’s current X470/B450 BIOS must be upgraded first.

“Once you have submitted your claim for a processor loan boot kit, AMD will require pictures of your 3rd Gen Ryzen™ Desktop Processor and AMD Socket AM4 400 Series motherboard, which clearly shows the model numbers and unique serial numbers as well as a copy of the purchase invoice(s) to authorize the request. Additionally, a summary or copy of communication with the motherboard manufacturer is requested to indicate why support from the Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) is not suitable.

Once the RMA request is approved, the AMD Athlon 200GE processor will be sent with pre-paid return shipping. The processor is provided as a temporary loan to you for the sole purpose of updating the BIOS and must be returned within 10 business days of receipt. It is not necessary to return the provided thermal solution.”

Yeah, i had to laugh a bit about that last line. Those wishing to receive a free boot kit should go to the AMD online warranty claims page (https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/warranty-information/rma-form), fill in their full contact and product details (3rd Gen Ryzen Processor OPN number and serial number), and in the Problem Description field enter “Boot kit Required” (without quotes).

That's nice of AMD.

Just a suggestion, if AMD even reads this, make a bios/chipset that provides at least a basic boot up, even if it's downclocked or cores temporarily disabled for new/unknown chips and have a bios notification suggesting a bios update

A lot of boards have a BIOS flashback feature, which allows you to flash the BIOS without the need for CPU. If AMD continues this trend of long lasting platforms, I think more and more board manufacturers will include this feature.

But yea. Having a universal solution is preferable.

A lot of shops offer you a service where they will flash the bios to the latest. It costs some petty cash, but it should be hassle free afterwards.

AMD is working hard to gain users. He's already beaten me.
