AMD Mantle might end up in the next revision of OpenGL

AMD Mantle might end up in the next revision of OpenGL

AMD has hopes that a closer collaboration with the Khronos Group (responsible for standards like OpenGL) will help them integrate AMDs low-level cross platform Mantle API into OpenGL. The Khronos Group already mentioned that it is working on a new API as follow-up to Open GL and they might embed Mantle code. This should help addressing GPUs much directer and free up CPU utilization much better. That could mean better graophics and faster framerates.

Because the new OpenGL NEXT, as it is called, will be built from ground up AMD is willing to help to share knowledge and expertise within the Kronos Group in regards to Mantle. AMD Richard Huddy stated that the Khronos Group has full access to the Mantle API and that they will be allowed to copy and re-use code with no charge whatsoever. Basically they are free to use what they want.

It still will remain very unclear how much mantle code 'OpenGL NEXT' will end up using and if they will be using it at all. Also it is very unclear when OpenGL NEXT will be released. Huddy also sheds light on DirectX 12 and the future of Mantle. According to AMD DirectX 12 is directly influenced by the Mantle release. Huddy also claims that Mantle will not loose ground by the release of DX12. Currently 75 developers at AMD are working on Mantle making the turnaround time for AMD Mantle development and vertical integration much faster then Microsoft's DirectX which updates every 4 to 5 years to a new revision.

AMD is planning to move forward with Mantle as they will integrate it into workstation cards as well, meaning cards like FirePro will get Mantle support in the not too far away future also.

Well i am surprised, since mantle still is closed, and open gl is a open api that has the same benefits of dx being higher level and working on most hardware out there, in my eyes mantle is the completely other direction, yes amd are still saying it will be open..., but as they themselves stated it is designed specifically for gcn, even theire own older cards cannot support it, so if open gl would truly be mantle based it would limit it more than give it any advantage,

The Khronos group will obviously not allow OpenGL to end up being GCN-only. That would defy the open nature of Linux. AMD is just letting them learn from Mantle and use its code so they can make the new OpenGL as good as possible.

AMD is being charitable unlike the selfish, corporate overrun companies like MS and Nvidia.

Uh if the Mantle additions are implemented via extensions then it definitely can be hardware specific. There are plenty of things vendor specific now in OpenGL. Also OpenGL already has low level "close to metal" support via that extension system, it's what makes OpenGL more powerful than DirectX. It also already has extremely low CPU overhead. So I can't really see what Mantle is bringing to the table unless it's hardware specific.

And you're second statement is just wrong. Nvidia contributed more code to linux in 2013 then AMD did and Microsoft was a top contributor for years. Plus Nvidia open sourced it's K1 graphics support + is now contributing documentation for the Nouveau project.

Both AMD and Nvidia are charitable when it suits them. Stop being a fanboy.

Microsoft was never a particularly significant contributor apart from adding support for Microsoft technologies to the Linux kernel. It dropped off the top contributors list last year and will probably stay that way indefinitely. Nvidia did very well to piss off Linus Torvalds.

As for the Nouveau project, you know very well why it exists and what it aims to create right? Ironically Nvidia was uptight about releasing documentation about their GPUs from the very beginning (complete opposite of AMD) It was only recently they released some to make up to Linus and play catch up with AMD.

Microsoft doesn't want OS competition. Nvidia is closed off as hell, while AMD practically gives everything it has.
