+40% IPC is nowhere near enough to beat skylake.

That's not what they're aiming for, it's a fresh start on a new platform for AMD. This hasn't happened for years now since being stuck on AM3 forever.
+40% IPC is nowhere near enough to beat skylake.

AMD doesn't have to beat Skylake in lightly threaded tasks. They just have to be within a reasonable margin, at the right pricing with the right feature set. Zen should compete just fine in heavily threaded applications though.
