In an interview, AMD senior vice president Sam Naffziger discusses power efficiency in GPUs. Among the several concerns addressed, AMD gave a graphic that forecasts that the market would have devices with TDPs exceeding 700W by 2025.

The chart doesn't indicate much, and the graphic doesn't show what AMD plans to provide in the future. Without context, the picture looks to foreshadow what the corporation would give the market in the near future. And obviously we're talking about industrial/data center applications. The graph depicts the industry's upcoming energy dilemma, as well as GPU power consumption and TDP rates tracked throughout time, with a view to 2025.

"We took a really deep look at Nvidia's designs and what they did, and of course we aimed to make it much better," said Sam Naffziger.

Sam Naffziger has worked with AMD for 16 years, entering the graphics business in 2017 to boost the company's overall performance per watt and efficiency. According to the CEO, AMD targeted a 25x energy-saving effort by 2020, which 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen APUs reached with Radeon Vega Integrated Graphics.  The corporation now wants to gain 30x efficiency in tasks like machine learning and high-performance computing. According to Naffziger, energy efficiency allows for more architectural freedom. According to him, you may use it to either increase performance or emphasize efficiency.

According to Sam, the biggest rise in consumption is due to the increased voltage of the graphics cards. The impact on energy usage is quadratic. And he uses NVIDIA as an example, which can overclock its graphics cards to 2.5 GHz with the need to elevate the voltage to 1.2 or 1.3 volts. Meanwhile, AMD verifies that these high frequencies are achieved with lower, and hence more efficient, voltages.
