AMD Epyc Rome CPUs hold almost 40 billion transistors per chip

Many ways lead to Rome, and for AMD that means EPYC and perhaps even Threadripper processors with up-to 64 cores per chip. Have you ever wondered how many Transistors there would be on such a chip?

Well, our colleague from hardwatreluxx asked himself the same question adn started some research based on some die-shots from one of their forum members.  A Rome CPU consists of 9 dies that are connected to each other for a total area of 1008 square millimeters. This results in a transistor number of no less than 39.54 billion. The previous 'Matisse' Epyc CPU contains much fewer dies and has only 9.89 billion transistors. The impressive number may be due to the new Zen 2 architecture and the 7nm production process as well as that added IO chip.

Comparison of fabrication, size and number of transistors
  The size transistors
Zen (Zeppelin) 212 mm² 4.8 billion
Zen + (Zeppelin) 212 mm² 4.8 billion
CCD (Matisse & Rome) 74 mm² 3.9 billion
IOD (Matisse) 125 mm² 2.09 billion
IOD (Rome) 416 mm² 8.34 billion
Matisse in total: 2x CCD + IOD

273 mm²

9.89 billion
Rome in total: 8x CCD + IOD 1,008 mm² 39.54 billion

You say that like $8000 is a lot of money for such a CPU. You'll spend over $10k for an Intel CPU with less than half the core count.
