AMD changes its statements, Ryzen 7000 will consume up to 230W
After constantly assuring the press and fans that the 170W exhibited at Computex 2022 was the maximum power of the socket, the company has officially verified that the amount is, in fact, the maximum TDP specification for the Ryzen CPU.
This does not imply that the Ryzen 7000 CPUs would have a variant with a TDP of 170 W, as AMD's Robert Hallock stated only two days ago that the value of 170 W was from the PPT, which is the maximum power for the socket. The increased maximum power for the socket of 230 W is nearly as high as the Core i9-12900K for Intel's LGA1200 socket, which offers a maximum load of approximately 241 W.
“AMD would like to correct the maximum socket power and TDP limits of the upcoming Socket AM5. Socket AM5 socket supports up to 170W TDP with up to 230W PPT. TDP*1.35 is the standard calculation for TDP vs. PPT for AMD sockets in “Zen”.
“This new TDP will enable significantly higher compute performance for high core count CPUs under heavy workloads, where we will have other 65W and 105W TDP models that Ryzen is known for today. AMD prides itself on providing the enthusiast community with products with the best transparency, and we want to take this opportunity to apologize for our mistake and any confusion we may have caused on this issue."
So in short: Power Specs: 230W Peak Power, 170W TDP.

Don't think I've ever seen the term PPW used, but I like it. What I don't like is the number. If the PPT was 170 I'd be a lot more excited.
In any case, I don't plan to get one of these super high-end CPUs, so, such numbers likely won't affect me. After finding out my old X370 board now supports the 5000 series, I'm heavily considering just getting a 5800X3D. Honestly, maybe even a 5700X. It really just comes down to how much better 7000 will be.

Again, disappointed on the direction AMD is going plus hiding the real info from the announcements to look good.
We need more efficient hardware, not this +200W monsters...
I'll stick to under 100W CPUs thank you.
Then buy the cheap ones

I need +200w monsters, so talk for yourself

and even i dont really need it or could not live without since my current setup is also really nice - i just would love to do this... put my hands on that silicom (not that silicon...

^ and i need to admit it IS def. a HUGE problem if you do all of this with a passion... Even you DO NOT need something - we will always find a reason why we still need it

Nizzen: I totally understand you!

I don't think anybody here would balk at the idea of overclocking a CPU to +200W. If anything, I would hope it can be pushed well beyond 230W. We're all enthusiasts so that's just kinda expected. The problem is whether the stock configuration uses that much. Even as a hardcore overclocker, maximizing efficiency matters, because generally speaking, a more efficient CPU has more OC headroom.

I agree.
AMD and others should be pushing for more efficient, not the other way around.
But as long as they offer more sensible parts, no problem.
But i´ve read some "disturbing" stuff about a piece of hardware that spies on it´s users and can`t be turned off, i hope Hilbert and others look at this carefully.
