AMD CEO Lisa Su: High-end Navi GPU and Radeon Raytracing is coming

In an interview, AMD CEO Lisa Su stated that a high-end Navi GPU is in the works. The market for high-end video cards is important for AMD, she said, without giving further details.

Is real-time ray-tracing in graphics going to be as big as NVIDIA says it is?

LS: I’ve said in the past that ray tracing is important, and I still believe that, but if you look at where we are today it is still very early. We are investing heavily in ray tracing and investing heavily in the ecosystem around it – both of our console partners have also said that they are using ray tracing. You should expect that our discrete graphics as we go through 2020 will also have ray tracing. I do believe though it is still very early, and the ecosystem needs to develop. We need more games and more software and more applications to take advantage of it. At AMD, we feel very good about our position on ray tracing.

Do you think that AMD has to have a high-end competitor in the discrete graphics market?

LS: [laughs] I know those on Reddit want a high end Navi! You should expect that we will have a high-end Navi, and that it is important to have it. The discrete graphics market, especially at the high end, is very important to us. So you should expect that we will have a high-end Navi, although I don’t usually comment on unannounced products.

Whatever it is, it will battle with the Ampere, and it will be somewhat competitive (maybe not to the top card of Nvidia), just like we used to know from AMD.
Raytracing, I'm still curious to see if it there will be specialised HW (cores) or if they do brute force mode via compute and software.

But the one thing that I take away from this, they will have some RT, but just like with Nvidia right now, the performance won't be anything like we expect. So hold your horses, still no 4K60 full ray tracing incoming in 2020 from any competitor (and with full RT I'm meaning, not just a single effect like RT global illumination, the other RT reflections, third game some other aspect, but ALL of it in one scene).

All I care about is solid raster performance. In addition to that if they can provide ray tracing without special dedicated hardware on the chip ("cough" "cough" turding which doesn't do anything most of the time and just sits around) we can have a wonderful product most certainly at a lower cost in comparison to Nvidia.

Never ever again I will spend more than 500EUR on a GPU, if they will go with 800-1000 EUR price range, that will be a strong pass from me.

They said dedicated hw will be used for rt. Amd will also need some similiar feature to dlss (hopefuly better).
