AMD brings Radeon Image Sharpening (RIS) visuals to select Radeon RX 400/500 products

AMD brings Radeon Image Sharpening (RIS) visuals to select Radeon RX 400/500 products

With last weeks driver AMD brought Radeon Image Sharpening (RIS) feature to the Radeon RX 570, RX 580 and RX 590, as well as RX 470, and RX 480 graphics cards.

With the latest Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition driver, mainstream Radeon gamers can now enjoy the same crisp visuals the Radeon RX 5700 series GPUs provide in a wide range of AAA, eSports and indie games.

RIS is an intelligent contrast-adaptive sharpening algorithm that brings crispness and clarity to in-game visuals that have been softened by other post-process effects, with virtually no impact on gaming performance. When paired with Radeon GPU upscaling, RIS enables sharp visuals and fluid frame rates on very high-resolution displays.

RIS works across DirectX 12 and Vulkan titles on the Radeon RX 570, RX 580, RX 590, RX 470, and RX 480 graphics cards and is enabled in Radeon Software, so game developers do not need to implement support for RIS into the games themselves.

AMD continues to democratize access to cutting-edge technology. From first time mainstream gamers to those looking for the best experiences in AAA 1080p gaming, the Radeon RX 500 and 400 series GPUs that now offer RIS allow gamers to immerse themselves in hyper-real, complex visual worlds while maintaining fluid framerates.

"AMD will gauge the reception of and demand for Radeon Image Sharpening, and based on that we will decide whether we will make the technology available on other Radeon RX cards in the future."

AMD is currently also looking into supporting the VEga series. You can download the latest version of Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition here.

I like RIS, but it would be better if AMD added strength control into Radeon Setting's overlay.

Excellent news. RX 590 keeps up with GTX 1660 in many games. The 8 Gt memory is beneficial and driver updates will still even further improve performance. Polaris cards have already aged well and they can have their place in the market if price drops soon enough.

It would be interesting if they allowed DX11 games to use this.

They have to get DX11 working right. Its not a if they will allow it.

Its really nice for DX12 games and removes that softness to them. Especially makes Shadow of the Tomb Raider look amazing, and same with Forza Horizion 4. Tested on a RX 480 Nitro 4GB with a RX 580 Nitro bios.
