Updated: AMD Ryzen 4000 APUs (incl 8-core Ryzen 7 4700G) + Pro Prices are Known

It’s been a long time coming with lots of leaks and information out there. But AMD today has announced its Ryzen 4000 APUs. First things first, the new APUs, for the time being, will only be available in pre-built systems and OEM. That means disappointment for the consumers out there that have been waiting on a processor with embedded graphics (APU).

The reasons for the lack of public retail availability is not clear, but the news is somewhat bothersome and unexpected. AMD mentioned that at a later stage, some of these APUs would make it into the retail DIY market. When or whenever that is, they did not say. AMD will be making a series of product announcements today, for desktop, it's all about Ryzen 4000  (processors with embedded graphics) in 65W and 35 Watt configuration. The 4000G series aka Renoir chip differs from previous generations in the sense that they are made out of one chip, thus it holds 8-cores, not separated into a 2x4 configuration. Because all cores are physically on the same chip and fall within one single CCD, the latencies between processor cores are low and more consistent compared multi core complex units.

With latency issues (we expect) vanished we'll need to tackle a possible the Achilles heel of this APU series. If we take the 8-core part, you’ll notice a total of 12MB of cache. It features 4 MB of L2 and 8 MB of L3 cache for a total of 12 MB cache. This is unquestionably more moderate than the 32 MB of L3 cache of say the 8-core core Ryzen 7 3800X. This will have an impact on performance. To date, however, AMD has not seeded these APUs for media reviews, so we cannot (yet) check that out.

The graphics performance of the new APUs should increase significantly, up-to maybe 50% even, that all is mainly due to the massive clock frequency bump jumping from ~1.25 GHz on last-gen, towards ~2.0 GHz on the current generation of APUs, the architecture is Vega generation based.

65 Watt APUs

AMD is announcing three Ryzen APU processors based on a 7nm Renoir design for AM4 desktop sockets, so yes, they do fir on your AMD X570 or B550 motherboard. The flagship APU will feature eight cores and 16 threads and is the Ryzen 7 4700G. The product clocks in at 3.6 and 4.4 GHz for base and turbo frequencies, respectively.  The GPU based on VEGA architecture is clocked at 2.1 GHz. The 4700G has 8 Graphics Cores totaling towards 512 Shader Processors, Vega architecture based. A model with six cores and 12 threads is be called Ryzen 5 4600G in its end has six cores and 12 threads and has a base clock of 3.7 GHz with boost ability up to 4.2 GHz. It has 448 Shader processors enabled. The lowest rated APU in the 65W stack is the 4300G with four CPU cores and thus eight threads. It has 384 shader cores active.

35 Watt APUs

AMD will also launch the GE series of APUs, these are the more energy-friendly parts rated at a TDP of just 35W. We listed these in the table below including the specs. Below that you can find a presentation deck.

Athlon 3000 G-Series

AMD today releases three Athlon 3000 G-Series processors. There are two and four core products, lack Hyperthreading for the 4 core parts (the two core does get 4 threads), and run a max clock up-to 3.9 GHz for the 65W part. The two lower SKUs run 35W. The graphics cores/perf remains unspecified. Please check the slide deck presentation for more info on that.

AMD has not shared anything on prices. Based on the model numbers used, we can speculate that the prices will likely be a lot higher than the initial list prices of the Ryzen 5 3400G and Ryzen 3 3200G, but that is speculation, of course. Once the Ryzen 4000G APUs reach our test lab, we'll test them out deeply. Unfortunately, AMD has yet to seed anyone with samples, Keep an eye out, as we'll check them out as soon as we can.

Update on prices:

A new list was posted on twitter by momomo_US and have been confirmed, showing the prices of some of the PRO parts. The 8-core and 16-thread APU Ryzen 7 PRO 4750G will cost 309 USD, 20 USD less than Ryzen 7 3700X. The 6-core/12-thread Ryzen 5 PRO 4650G will cost 209 USD and Ryzen 3 PRO 4350G is priced at 149 USD.
