AMD Announces 32-core / 64-threads Ryzen Threadripper (12nm Zen+)

AMD Announces 32-core / 64-threads Ryzen Threadripper (12nm Zen+)

At Computex in a press-conference AMD just announced Ryzen Threadripper Gen2, much like Ryzen 2000 based on 12nm Zen+ architecture. Marketed as heavy metal Threadripper.

AMD will be launching several new models including a staggering 32-core and 64-threads processor. The new 32-core processor fits into the current SP3 socket with your existing X399 motherboard, likely accompanied by a firmware update. It has four eight-core dies under that heat spreader, these would be the new 12 nm 8-core "Pinnacle Ridge" dies that bring the advantages of Precision Boost II and XFR 2.0. AMD had working samples at the Computex event, crunching away in Blender with a live demo.

Though names have not been mentioned, we expect Ryzen Threadripper 2900X, 2920X and 2950X and personally, I like the sound of Ryzen Threadripper 2990X. As mentioned, with Threadripper Gen2 you can expect a refresh of the current line-up; an 8-core Threadripper 2900X, a 12-core Threadripper 2920X, a 16-core Threadripper 2950X and the new 32-core /64-threads SKUs. Since the gap from 16 to 32 cores is a big one, perhaps we'll see a 24 core version as well. AMD will apply the same Zen+ tweaks to the processors; including memory latency optimizations and higher clock speeds. A release and availability date has not been mentioned though AMD stated that the lineup is in the works, and you can expect a Q3-2018 launch for the initial SKUs.

Yes!!! we knew it gonna happen from day 1 :), and the best part is that it's backward compatibility, best for working workstation that you don't need to rebuild the system an reinstall all the programs and setting it all up- this is huge time saver for professionals!
RIP Intel!

PS- while Intel has problem on 10nm, AMD Epyc 7nm already in testing :-)

The same pr stunt as Intel did, cpus with higher core counts /16+/ gonna be bottlenecked thanks to the quad channel and the new added parts will not have the direct access to the memory, that is going to add huge latencies and performance penalty.

I guess it's just a matter of piling on the cores until an improved tech arrives that will allow 10GHz+ clock speeds without liquid nitrogen cooling. Perhaps graphene will save us in the next 10/15 years. Next up, however, Intel i9 extreme 64 cores 128 threads!
