AMD aims for AM5 to have a similar lifespan to AM4 (5 years)

AMD's Socket AM5 platform was unveiled at CES 2022. AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su confirmed this week that the new socket will have a similar lifespan to its predecessor, the AM4 socket. She claimed that the firm was delighted with the evolution of AM4 and that AM5 should follow in the footsteps of its predecessor.

AM4 debuted in 2017 alongside AMD's initial Ryzen processors, making it the company's first socket. It has appeared in multiple generations of motherboards throughout the years and is expected to do so again this year with the Ryzen 5000X3D processors.

Well, we are very happy with the evolution of AM4… we said we would keep it going for a long time and we did. We continue to believe that it has been good for the community and, frankly, it has also been good for us. " ”Said Dr. Lisa Su.

“It was time to make a socket transition to support new technology, and I think in terms of strategy it should be similar. I don't have an exact number of years, but I would say the AM5 will be a durable rig like AM4. I think AM4 will remain on the market for a few more years ”

AMD's new sockets will include improvements over the previous generation. AM5 will support DDR5 memory and PCIe Gen 5 interfaces.  The new socket will be comparable to the one used by Intel's Core family of processors. The AM5 will feature 1718 pins and the possibility to retain the cooling system from the previous iteration.
