Acer V9800 4K Ultra-High-Definition Home Cinema Projector

Acer V9800 4K Ultra-High-Definition Home Cinema Projector

Acer announced its V9800 4K UHD home cinema projector. Native Ultra-High-Definition (UHD, 3840 x 2160) resolution and incredible color range make the V9800 the ideal projector for a truly cinematic viewing experience in any home.

Featuring a TI® 4K DMD processor, the V9800 serves up more than 8 million pixels — four times more than a 1080p Full HD projector. The UHD resolution allows images to come to life on the big screen with all of the user’s favorite movies projected in incredibly fine detail. In addition, a super-resolution video engine allows the V9800 to upscale and enhance lower resolution content.

The V9800 follows the Rec 709 protocol set by the International Telecommunications Union for high-definition television, an industry color specification that allows a viewing device (TV, monitor or projector) to recreate colors exactly as they’ve been imagined by the director. The Rec 709 specification digitally defines the color identity during post-production, which allows a compatible projector to recognize and decode the film’s intended visual feeling. Thanks to the inclusion of Rec 709, Acer’s V9800 projector is able to reproduce faithfully the original colors and tones to give viewers an authentic movie-watching experience. The V9800 also features the industry-standard sRGB mode to guarantee consistency and high-quality contrast, while eliminating deviation in color temperature during playback.

In addition to authentic color reproduction, Acer’s ColorPurity technology is applied to the V9800, combining a RGBRGB color wheel with unique lamp control techniques, resulting in a wider color gamut and reduced rainbow effects, allowing the viewer to experience pure reds, rich greens and deep blues for amazingly realistic viewing. The V9800 operates at an extremely low noise level of 20 dBA so movie aficionados are able to hear even the quietest whispers.

No information about HDR support, so I guess does not support it?

yeah , without support for BT.2020 it is sort of pointless but since it is a projector , the only light sources that can almost do the BT.2020 gamut are laser based or laser / LED hybrid models. Those types of projectors are not priced for consumers yet and are barely priced within reason for custom integrators costing around $10,000 USD or more last I saw

the best you can hope to get is maybe support for the DCI-P3 color space and proper support to map HDR content to the projectors gamut so it can handle UHD blu-ray or HDR streaming content.

Even then it is a much harder thing to accomplish in a DLP projector with a color wheel that can be done is say a quantum dot enhanced LCD screen or OLED screen.

Some triple chip DLP projectors or LCOS are out on the market in that $10,000 price range that are setup to emulate bt2020 and work pretty well but it is going to be a few years still before they make it into a lower price range.

I bet CES in 2017 will have a ton more options and maybe some HDR computer monitors will be shipping next year too.
