4K UHD Netflix content on NVIDIA GPUs (update) MS Pulls Free HEVC Support

4K UHD Netflix content on NVIDIA GPUs (update) MS Pulls Free HEVC Support

Nvidia updated its support pages with an update on 4K UHD Netflix content playback in relation to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. Below the fold an overview of options, necessities. Something Nvidia notes, HEVC codec is no longer free. Microsoft requires you to purchase a license.

4K UHD Netflix content on NVIDIA GPUs To enable Netflix UHD playback, the following is required:

  • NVIDIA Driver version 387.96 or newer driver.  No older GeForce driver will support this functionality at this time
  • NVIDIA Pascal based GPU or newer, GeForce GTX 1050 or greater with minimum 3GB memory
  • HDCP 2.2 capable monitor(s). Please see the additional section below if you are using multiple monitors and/or multiple GPUs.
  • Microsoft Edge browser or Netflix app from the Windows Store
  • Microsoft Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (10.0.16299 Build 16299 or newer):
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4028685/windows-10-get-the-fall-creators-update
  • Approximately 25Mbps (or faster) internet connection.

Single or multi GPU multi monitor configuration

In case of a multi monitor configuration on a single GPU or multiple GPUs where GPUs are not linked together in SLI/LDA mode, 4K UHD streaming will happen only if all the active monitors are HDCP2.2 capable. If any of the active monitors is not HDCP2.2 capable, the quality will be downgraded to FHD. Below is a sample table for the case of 2 monitors:

Monitor 1

Monitor 2

Expected Stream Quality

HDCP2.2 (active)

HDCP2.2 (active)

4K UHD

HDCP2.2 (active)

HDCP1.X (connected but not active)

4K UHD

HDCP2.2 (active)

HDCP1.X (active)

FHD

SLI configuration

Currently, 4K UHD streaming is not supported for SLI/LDA configurations. However, if the GPUs are not linked together in SLI/LDA mode, 4K UHD streaming will work fine if all of the active monitors are HDCP2.2 capable.

Please note.  If you are using a fresh install of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, you may need to go to the Windows store to purchase the HEVC codec to playback Netflix 4K/HDR content. Microsoft no longer provides this for free.

Some people run everything from their PC. (No TV/console/media streaming device)

I still use my PC for 90% of the stuff I watch, but that is because my preferred player is Mediaportal and MadVR as a renderer is fantastic. It does mean watching stuff can end up with the complexity of setting up a PC game, but some of us are masochists lol.

The Netflix app on Windows is awful and borderline unusable if you are using a remote control, but was used daily by my wife until we got a new Tivo box and a FireStick.

A PC is only good for HTPC usage if it’s for illegal or self-ripped content, I always recommend people avoid using a PC at all costs for anything legal.

The DRM situation will only get worse as no one cares about pissing off legitimate customers, the amount how do not own a SmartTV, console or Chomecast/Firestick/ROKU is so tiny that it’s insignificant.

I agree with you, but it's not the PC user's fault. I pay for netflix etc, and tbh. when firefox just "decided" to cut off the api towards amazon prime for instance, it simply stopped working. I mean, no warning? No info on what actually happened? Took me 2 hours of googling to find the answer that my problem was supposed to be like this, intended by the ff foundation. Well, thanks you f*cks. And no, there is no APP for my PC, they'd be called PROGRAMS for me and no, there isn't one either for win7.

I don't own a smart TV since I was smart enough to buy a model that served me well until now, the last 11 years now already. Paid a little more, that's why it still has what I need in supported standards.
I quit using a console because console games simply didn't appeal to me any more, and honestly, the money I was spending on PS3 and games was in no comparison to what I used on my PC during that time. With the money spend on two dozen games and the console itself (let alone additional hardware you have to buy these days like extra controllers and charging stations and wtf you name it), I used the same amount of money to upgrade my gaming rig and buy 2 games, practically the same time spent with the same money, only a lot more investment in the long term use of the PC with a console that's now basically a brick.
Why should I buy myself any of those sticks since I wanted to browse on my TV too, and play games (no console) without suffering a nervous breakdown without a keyboard and a proper mouse, so I just hooked up my old gaming rig with splendid success, hardware wise. Still works well.

Yeah, I'm a dying species, but I completely agree with your second sentence, nobody of those stupid marketing driven idiots cares about pissing off paying legit customers, they're more worried about geoblocking and DRM than actually giving people a chance to want to pay for it. That's just how I see it.

I never suggested it was the fault of PC users, only that they should cancel Amazon Prime/Netflix subscriptions if they plan on only using them on a PC.

Well, I've turned older PCs into HTPCs. I just prefer being able to do whatever I want compared to other limited media devices.
The benefit long term is also that you typically just need to get a new graphics card when it's old, whereas the other media devices require a full replacement.

As for Netflix, Internet Explorer and lately Edge have always been the best browsers if you can't use the Netflix app.
