NVIDIA ION2 officially launched

By Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 03/02/2010 08:37 PM | 0 comment(s) ]

Guru3D.com ImageNVIDIA officially introduced its next-generation ION graphics processor, promising high graphics performance and high battery life for netbooks.
NVIDIA introduced the Next-generation NVIDIA(R) ION(TM) graphics processor today, which will supercharge netbooks with 10 times the graphics performance of standard netbooks(1) and enable up to 10 hours of battery life(2) thanks to NVIDIA(R) Optimus(TM) technology.

The new ION graphics processing unit (GPU) vastly outperforms basic netbook graphics by delivering rich HD media in games, movies, and Internet-based video. Unlike netbooks with Intel integrated graphics, ION netbooks have the power to play amazing HD video smoothly from sites like YouTube and support popular PC games like World of Warcraft.

The new ION netbooks also feature NVIDIA's highly acclaimed Optimus technology, which automatically selects the best graphics processor for running any given application -- seamlessly routing the workload to either an NVIDIA discrete GPU or Intel integrated graphics. The result is great battery life and superior performance when you need it.

More than 30 products featuring the new ION GPU are expected to launch by this summer including netbooks, small form factor desktops, "barebones" systems, motherboards, and discrete add-in cards. The Acer Aspire One 532G (10-inch) and ASUS 1201PN (12-inch) are expected to be the first new ION netbooks to be introduced. New all-in-one PCs powered by next-generation ION will include the ASUS EeeTop 2010PNT and Lenovo C200. Channel partners including AOpen, AsRock, Asus, Foxconn, Giada, J&W, Jetway, Pegatron, POV, Shuttle, and Zotac also plan to introduce new ION-based products soon.

Netgear have outed two new wireless home networking products at CeBIT 2010 today, the High-Performance Wireless-N HD Home Theater Adapter (WNHDB3004) shown here, and the Ethernet to Wireless Adapter (WNCE2001) for easily bridging wired devices to a wireless network.  The Home Theater Adapter is apparently capable of supporting multiple simultaneous Full HD 1080p streams, and comes with pre-configured security settings so that, after a single button push, the two towers are linked.

As for the frequencies it uses, there

CEBIT 2010 - EVGA W555 motherboard details

By Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 03/02/2010 11:44 AM | 0 comment(s) ]

Remeber the dual-socket LGA 1366 motherbaord from eVGA ? Well two things, one there are more specs on them, and two .. we'll actually be reviewing hopefully this month. Actually we'll be sending it off to one of team Guru3D overclockers to haev some fun with the motherboard, a couple of Xeon 5500 series processors and sure .. Liquid Nitrogen. Anyway -- the upcoming EVGA W555 motherboard is obviously a new dual QPI Xeon mainboard with 4-way SLI and CrossFire support.

It has some interesting features, such as the capability to run different processor models together. You can even mix quad-core and hexa-core chips as it now seems, but they must be from the same architecture family, it's not possible to mix and match Westmere plus Nehalem processors.

* "Power Consumption Tests:

  • 2.8GHz x 2 @ 1.20v w 24 threads Full Load + 12GB Rams + 1x GTX285 Classified Full Load = 535w from AC socket
    2.8GHz x 2 @ 1.20v w 24 threads Full Load + 12GB Rams + 4x GTX285 Classified Full Load = 991w from AC socket
  • 4.0GHz x 2 @ 1.30v w 24 threads Full Load + 12GB Rams + 1x GTX285 Classified Full Load = 766w from AC socket
  • 4.0GHz x 2 @ 1.30v w 24 threads Full Load + 12GB Rams + 4x GTX285 Classified Full Load = 1,243w from AC socket
  • 4.2GHz x 2 @ 1.40v w 24 threads Full Load + 12GB Rams + 1x GTX285 Classified Full Load = 913w from AC socket
  • 4.2GHz x 2 @ 1.40v w 24 threads Full Load + 12GB Rams + 4x GTX285 Classified Full Load = 1,390w from AC socket"

Check out soem photo's we took earlier, you'll spot the two LGA-1366 sockets, each powered by an 8-phase digital PWM circuit. Each socket is wired to six DDR3 DIMM slots supporting triple-channel memory for that socket. The board has 7 PCIe slots and to feed them the motherboard is equipped with two NF200 (NVIDIA) bridge chips to add additional PCIe lanes.  We took a couple of photo's at CES earlier this year.

Don't Use Your PS3 until they fix PSN bug

By Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 03/02/2010 11:36 AM | 0 comment(s) ]

Nasty .. just nasty.  If you happen to own a PS3 older than one of the slim versions Sony is actually recommending that you don't use it until they have fixed a date issue

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3. We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

  • The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
  • When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following  message appears on the screen;

MSI 890GXM G65 review (AMD 890GX chipset)

We test the MSI 890GXM G65. With the six-core Thuban processor slowly rearing it's head and new technologies like USB 3.0 and SATA 6G on the horizon, AMD needed another update to their motherboard chipset, to get it prepared for the 6-core lovin abut as well as bringing support for the new interfaces.

It's based on the new AMD 890GX chipset and is armed with features like USB 3.0 and SATA 6G. So without further ado let's have a peek at the all new 890GX chipset from AMD

Check out this Guru3D review here.

CEBIT 2010 - ASUS shows R5970 Ares

By Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 03/02/2010 08:19 AM | 0 comment(s) ]

ASUS is showing off their ARES graphics card over at CeBIT. The card is indeed based on a dual-GPU (5970) model. ASUS would use up all available stream processors (2x1600) and then opposed to the 5970 use normal clocks.

  • Normal clocks: (725/1000 MHz core/memory)
  • Ares 5870 clocks: (850/1200 MHz).

Now in real-life ladies and gentlemen .. this would just be an overclocked Radeon HD 5970 or simply the R5970 in Crossfire -- but likely with some more memory and a price tag over inflated.

It will be interesting to see though as ASUS would use a custom PCB with new VRM control and much needed power phases. The card will come packed with 4GB of graphics memory and should be able to get a X14104 3DMark Vantage score.

Over at CeBIT they are showing off 3DMark scores of P23917 whereas a regular 5970 these days scores 21.000 points.

The card will have good availability (not limited) and is expected to cost a staggering 1000 EUR. Here are some photo's courtesy of tweakers.net
