Exploding Galaxy S3 was actually Microwaved

By Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 07/07/2012 10:09 AM | 0 comment(s) ]

A week or two ago we repoerted about a story from a consumer who's Galaxy S3 had exploded. Engadget reports that Samsung said they were looking into it and, along with a third party investigation, have decided it occurred as a result of "external energy" being applied to the device, not anything from within the phone itself. The damage is consistent with the phone going in the microwave.

The original poster dillo2k10 has posted an update on Boards.ie, indicating it was a mistake by someone else in an attempt to recover the phone after it got wet.

The Samsung Tomorrow post linked cites a report from Fire Investigations UK finding that the phone itself was not responsible for generating the heat that caused the damage, so GSIII owners (and the pockets of their skinny jeans) should be able to breathe easier.

Samsung starts selling 75-inch ES9000 smart TV

By Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 07/06/2012 10:57 AM | 0 comment(s) ]

Samsung is now selling a 75" ES9000 series smart TV in South Korea for 19.8 million won, the equivalent of about $17,450!

In short, if you loved the LED-backlit display of the 55-inch model, you're going to adore the ES9000, which features the same smart TV brains alongside a retractable webcam unit housed on the top edge. The picture was pleasingly rich and sharp -- presumably due to the aforementioned backlighting and the ES series' edge-to-edge design. The bezel is a mere 7.9mm and Samsung has decided to coat the frame in a gentle Rose Gold coating which, due to the TV's slightly shady location, was a little trickier to pick out.

Panasonic: No cheap OLED TVs anytime soon

By Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 06/30/2012 10:23 AM | 0 comment(s) ]

Panasonic president Kazuhiro Tsuga told the press that cheap OLED TVs aren't likely to hit the market for a "considerable time".
The take home message? Don't expect to hang up a brand new $300 OLED TV on your wall by the end of 2013.

The strategic Sony-Panasonic partnership is the result of pressure being applied by Korean-based electronics manufacturers, LG and Samsung. This year, both companies unveiled their own large-screen OLED televisions. Working together, Sony and Panasonic hope to minimize the effects of their head start.

Interestingly, Sony pioneered OLED technology. The company actually sold OLED televisions during 2007 and 2008, but halted production after both consumers and industry were spooked by financial uncertainty. Sony's 1080p, 27-inch OLED units sold for around $2000.

Antec HDTV Bias Lighting Kit - hands on

By Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 06/27/2012 12:28 PM | 0 comment(s) ]

A quick hands on with this one, Antec released HDTV Bias Lighting Kit last week.

You know when you have that new huge 55" LED TV and in the evening when it gets dark you can see a little LED wash / clouding on the black screen. It is a common problem these days.

Some people are very bothered by it, other not at all. It is a problem that can be fixed to a large extent by placing or pointing a light behind the screen. The visuals will change dramatically as your eyes will compensate that black level and contrast. This actually is the reason why Philips has released Ambi-light TVs initially.

Antec has a very simple solution at hand for roughly 30 USD/EUR, they took some of the brightest LEDs they could find, connect it towards the USB port of your television and when you power on, you have light. An adhesive coating on the LED strip will make it stick towards the back of the television. The LEDs will power up and down with activation of the HDTV, but should you wish to deactivate the  LEDs, you can simply turn it off with an convenient on/off switch.
