Removing International Support from Detonator XP
First, I trust you have read the guide about installing Detonator XP. Why would one want to install Detonator XP without international support? Well, let's look at the 43.00 driver. It has 22 MB, and that's compressed. When you use the file I provided in the Install guide, which decompress all files, the driver has 40.4 MB. in 148 files. If one removes the international files, leaving only the English ones, then the same driver will have only 16 MB uncompressed or 4.9 MB compressed in just 25 files. That's a big difference. Both for users, who will have less files in their system folder and for webmasters, which can host the same driver but using 4 times less bandwidth.
To solve this issue I created a file that will decompress the drivers and then delete all international files. And will do this automatically. No need for you to manually select which files. However, there's a catch. Because we delete file from the package we must also update the .inf file accordingly. This is a fairly easy job for anyone experienced. But for those that aren't we will also provide the files for a specific driver. Because .infs are usually different from driver to driver, the file for 43.00, for example, should not be used with 41.09 driver.
DO NOT use one with a different driver. It may work or it may not but it's on your own risk.
These are how you should do it, step by step:
1. Download the drivers from Guru3d site or from other mirrors.
2. Using WinRAR extract the archive to a folder.
If you don't use WinRAR start using it: RARLabs.
Right click the file you downloaded and choose: Extract to a folder like in this example:
3. In the folder WinRAR created you will notice a lot of files.
They're all compressed however and you'll need to decompress them before installing.
The following files will do just that automatically decompress and then delete all language and compressed files. This ensures that the folder will contain only the necessary files and will have the smallest possible number of files. It also contains the proper .inf
Download the file that suits the driver you downloaded
Detonator XP version -----> 40.52
-----> 40.72
-----> 41.09
-----> 41.80
-----> 42.01
-----> 42.30
-----> 42.42
-----> 42.51
-----> 42.68
-----> 42.70
-----> 42.81
-----> 42.82
-----> 42.86
-----> 42.90
-----> 42.92
-----> 43.00
Simply run it and follow the on-screen instructions. You just have to browse for the folder you placed the driver in. Then you click the Install button.
You can now see the great reduction of size of the folder you put the driver in. In there you now have the Nvidia driver. For installing it please refer to the Detonator XP Install Guide. But what if a new driver is leaked on the Net, and you want to try it before this article is updated with the file for this new Detonator?
In this case use the file below:
This will decompress and delete all language files. However, being a general file this one contains no .inf. That means youll have to modify the inf yourselves.
If you don't know how to do it, then WAIT for the updated version of this guide which will contain support for that particular new driver.
That's all.
Bonus:
If you want now to compress the driver to the smallest possible size for archiving or for distribution, compress it like in the following example:
Step by step, as usual J
a) Select all files and then right click and choose "Add to archive..."
b) Select best at Compression dialog, and also check "Create solid archive". Also check "Delete files" to avoid using disk space for the same files.
c) Click on Advanced tab then on "Compression..." button.
d) Match the settings you have with the ones shown below:
Now click OK twice and you'll have the smallest possible driver.
I hope you have enjoyed this article. You will find more here at guru3d. Simply take the time to read them. If you have any questions feel free to post in our forums or e-mail me.
