info: Creative Labs Europe

Today we are going Creative again, and I meant that in a more graphical kind of way. If you can remember our Creative Labs contest where you can win a leather Jacket (still open by the way, click here) then you must understand that our ties with Creative Labs Europe are good. So the leather jacket is already here, but in that same package Creative send out a GeForce FX 5900 to review also. Well, who are we to say no to that. Today's review ladies and gentlemen is based on the GeForce FX 5900, not the Ultra model, just the 5900. Basically this is the entry model in the high-end graphics card series. That means a better price but still awesome performance.

The GeForce FX 5900 produced around a GPU that is profiled as Cinematic GPU as it is capable of bringing cinematic visual effects on your PC with the combination of some brutal power and an excellent feature set. The CineFX GPU is of course capable of utilizing DirectX 9 Pixel Shaders 2.0+, Vertex Shader 2.0+ and OpenGL. Basically this product is in the high-end range and offers with it's 4x2 architecture (4 pixel pipelines x 2 TMU's a lot of gaming pleasure.

Nice red PCB, excellent cooling solution which is volume/noise wise normal and a product that is cheaper than the biggest flagship, the Ultra. On the other hand this version is clocked a tad slower and of course 'only' has 128 MB memory yet is using that excellent 256-bit memory bus thus leaves heaps of memory bandwidth. Bear in mind that we expect a value GeForce FX 5900 with 128-bit memory bus somewhere in the future also. Make no mistake .. this is the 256-bit version. Will there be a significant performance decrease over the Ultra model ? We'll we're gonna find that out, aren't we ?

Specifications & Features

  • 256-bit Memory Architecture 128MB of DDR memory
  • 2nd Generation compression & caching
  • Intellisample HCT (High Compression Technology)
  • UltraShadow Technology
  • CineFX 2.0 Engine
  • 0.13um Fabrication Process
  • Much more silent cooling solution than FlowFX
  • Core clock speed of 400 MHz
  • Memory frequency 700 MHz (2x350).

What also important to know is that in the stores there are no less than three GeforceFX 5900 products, all the brands and numbers are getting too crazy I tell you. In threefold here we go.

  • GeforceFX 5900 Ultra 128 MB (slower memory undefined yet, perhaps even 128-bit)
  • GeforceFX 5900 Ultra 128 MB (256-bit)
  • GeforceFX 5900 Ultra 256 MB

So when you go to the shop to buy one, be sure to check what you are buying.
