AMD Radeon Driver 17.7.2 - An Update the Crimson "ReLive" Driver

AMD is has been working hard on the v17.7.2 driver, in this article we look at what primary features they updated. This is the new v17.7.2 driver, and it has had some TLC from AMD and quite a bit of software updates and functionality. Time for a quick article, to cover all topics.

For the new 17.7.2 Radeon Crimson ReLive Edition I wanted to write a small article as the updates in this driver are significant for APUs and desktop graphics cards.

The new driver update contains several improvements to be found in the user interface, the DVR streaming enhancements and some new display functions. On the perf side of things the new focus is responsiveness as well as a new VSYNC mode being introduced, the primary overview entails:

Introduction of the Enhanced Sync, a display technology that helps increase gameplay responsiveness and decrese tearing. It also provides up to 34 percent lower latencyand 92 percent lower frame variance when tested with Overwatch.
Upgrades to Radeon Chill that interactively regulates framerate and now supports close to 40 of the world’s greatest games and is available for laptops, multi-GPU and Radeon XConnect-capable systems. Radeon Chill now offers extended battery life in the HP Omen by 30 percent when using Radeon Chill on the very high settings with the game League of Legends.
Radeon WattMan comprehensive control has also been upgraded with power state controls and memory under clocking for either increased performance or improved power savings.
Improved Game Responsiveness by reducing driver overhead which resulted in up to 31 percent (50ms) quicker response time with Tom Clancy’s The Division

Radeon Software 17.7.2 is packed with even more features for gamers, including Frame Rate Targeting Control that limits frame rate and saves power with DirectX 12 and multi-GPU support, the reintroduction of refined color controls with Per-Display Color Controls and Radeon Settings, a redesign of most of the features found within the Catalyst Control Center.

Performance

First off, in their presentation AMD claims performance increases of Radeon cards such as the RX 480/580 see of up to 13% performance increase with Relive. This however are the incremental performance increases over time dating all the way back to last year December, and not specific to the 17.7.2 driver in the slide. I also get that tummy feeling that game patches are a big part of overall game performance incremental performance. The new driver as such will not bring a perf increase seen from the previous iteration.

Crimson driver still had a part of the old control panel activated. That is now a thing of the past, all settings have been moved into Crimson drivers themselves making this a standalone driver with its own user interface.

ReLive

Last year AMD stepped away from Raptr for streaming and recording efforts, basically the integration of a DVR into the software. With this feature you may Capture, stream and share your gaming experience. All settings for recordings are configurable through Radeon Settings ReLive under the Recoding Tab. The quality of recording obviously will be relative to how new your Radeon graphics card really is and the CODEC option you will choose, here is a quick overview relative to AVC (H.264) and HEVC (H.265).

With the new release AMD is bumping it up a notch by offering higher quality video recording. Previously you have been able to record at up-to 50 Mbps stream quality, that number now is increased at up-to 100 Mbps. Personally I find 60 Mbps always a bit of a sweet-spot in MBs saved (file-size) and quality. Fool around with it what you like best quality wise. ReLive still install as optional as it will hog a bit of your CPU cycles when active.

A series of optimizations enabled through Radeon Software Crimson ReLive 17.7.2 has greatly reduced the performance impact of recording when using any of these features on products with smaller memory buffers – 4GB or less.

Another feature that will make the crowd go wild is that you can now have transparency for webcam overlays, and yes the crowd going wild was a pun. Ehm, I do not know who cares about this stuff, but apparently it was an end-user-request that now is included.
