MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming OC review 5

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 09/19/2014 03:31 AM [ 70 comment(s) ]

We review the new MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming OC edition. This affordable model comes with the new TwinFrozr V cooler. The GM204-200 chip is smacked onto a custom PCB surrounded with Military class components and obviously, with OC in the name... it comes a little tweaked as well. This card however has one 6 and one 8-pin power feed and again, does come with that new revision model 5 TwinFrozr cooler. The card has 4 GB graphics memory, is energy efficient and factory overclocked for you. You will be surprised by how this card looks, how silent it is, how well it performs and how much it can be overclocked.

Would 2x of these in SLi be worth it then ?, specs on left, will be in 1080p, 144Hz, and would be able to use 3D Vision, only sticking point is, my 920s only at 2.90Ghz.

I wouldn`t buy a single 970 or 980 with your current 290x. Overclock that cpu to 4ghz if possible, if its too hot with hyperthreading turn it off. 4ghz and 970 sli shoud not be too bad though I think it would bottleneck sli a bit.

1 no, 2 maybe.. Single 980GTX would be better imo.

Btw do OC that cpu :P at least 3.4 - 3.6ghz would help a lot.

BIB, If i knew how to, i would :D

Hmmm, don't fancy swapping to a 980, as the performance increase from my 290x isn't worth it, 2x 970s would be the best, as don't cost much more than a 980, and would giver a much bigger performance increase.

raise cpu multi, raise blck, rase VTT/QPI :P :D

Yeah that's true 980GTX is a sidegrade but if you plan on SLI later it can be a better investment then those 2x 970 now..

But do you even need more then 290X power? Does it lag somewhere?

Imo you would see bigger gains if you upgarded to 4790K + 2400mhz ddr3 + z97 mobo and really make that 290x come to life :nerd:
