Geil ONE Series memory reviewSomewhere in the 1980's there was this little band called Bruce and Bongo that had a hit with a song called Geil here in Europe. Lyrics went like, everybody's Geil, the disc jockey is Geil, etc, etc. You don't believe me? Click here for a miniature MP3 file, which we re-encoded at 48 kBits/s 22 Khz and made it less then a minute to not get ourselves in copyright issues with either Bruce or Bongo.

See the thing is words can have a different meaning in different cultures. In Germany Geil means something like, super, good, fine something like that. Not bad to relate a brand with. Here in the Netherlands however, geil means something different. Ask any Dutchman if he's geil and he'll frown upon you. Ask a girl and if she's geil and she'll either hit you in the face or you are about to have a very excellent evening. Yes, in Dutch the word Geil means horny, literally.

Now back on topic then, memory from Geil is what we'll be testing today (Ed: and thanks to those last 2 paragraphs it will probably be the last thing Geil send Hilbert to review =P ) If the tested memory today's is 'good' then we'll look at it the German way. If it's really good, well then that Dutch way might be in order :) (Ed: Would you and the memory sticks like to be alone for a while Hilbert?) The brandname Geil actually stands for Golden Emperor International Ltd, an Asian based manufacturer with a focus on high performing memory modules. They have a strong focus on the North America market and are steadily making a good name for themselves. They fit in with brands like Corsair, Muskin, OCZ and Crucial.

It's Thursday, a package comes in. I notice it's from Geil. Once opened I immediately notice a couple of things, the first being the class A packaging, spartan in all its ways but hey, there's no way you can damage the memory as the packaging is made of pure plexi-glass. The second thing you'll notice is the pure beauty of the Geil memory modules. Once you see the funky heatspreader with brushed tin coated copper finish and you'll immediately realize that Geil is manufacturing memory for the enthusiast audience. Today's memory is no different as once I sawthe sticker I went, "how on earth am I going to test that!?" Today's memory can handle a CAS latency of 1.5. Well... I have 6 PC's here in my little lab and not one can actually handle such an insanely fast CAS latency.

In the package we find two sticks of Geil One 512MB PC3200 memory rated to run at 200 MHz (DDR400) each while maintaining timings of CAS 1.5-2-2-5 or at PC4800 (DDR600) with timings at 2.5-4-4-7, that my friends is friggin fast memory. So fast... one could easily confuse this this memory with DDR2.

Good memory deserves a good system, therefore we'll test it on an nForce4 mainboard armed with an AMD 64 Athlon FX-57 processor. Oh hey besides all that 'latency' wickedness this memory is backed by a life-time warrantee, very appealing! Let's fire up this article and let's benchmark the crap out of it.
