Corsair RM650x (2021) power supply review 4

Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 04/08/2021 10:07 AM [ 26 comment(s) ]

We review the RM650x power supply from Corsair. This is the 2021 update for the RM series and next to an aesthetic overhaul is offered in a silent RMx series that comes with 80plus Gold certification, which means it's 90% efficient at 50% load. Efficiency matters. The PSU itself is fully modular, for most of you with a side panel window in their chassis a must really as you'll want modular cables.

you're actively trying to silence that.

Nope, literally, I am sitting to a rig with three ML fans at 400~500 RPM, you can't hear them. Perhaps you had a bad batch.

I never said you could hear them at 500rpm.Please don't twist my words.
I said maglev bearning produces a noise at 1100-1300rpm that I'm not hearing on any other fans.
did you check that ?

Yep, and as the review indicates max RPM is 923 for this PSU, so again not a problem as tested and perceptibly observed with my own ears. Not one single comment you made here in this thread validates you dissing this PSU/ML fan combo. Keep up this attitude though, as really I am one click away from halting your account, Gosh, you are so annoying.

ok go on then
I missed the rpm part,my fault clearly.

edit: wow it's actually pretty quiet, and the noise doesn't really kick in until 450w.efficient too.
might be my next psu :p

dissing this PSU

you're not serious,right ?

to add to the discussion with the ML fans, there are two types corsair make as well.
The older type with no RGB or just single colour LED lights, or the newer RGB model and they have different specs in regards to maximum RPM, static pressure and CFM.

I do think the main thing i like about the ML fans is how slow they can go compared to other fans, most other types only go as low as 600-800RPM while the ML can go all the way down to 400RPM, and the longevity of the ML fans is fantastic as well, i have pulled laptops apart that are 15 years old that have maglev fans in them and the fans still work fine with zero issues with no maintenance done on the fan or laptop for that entire time. (yes maglev fans have been used in laptops for a loooong time, quite a while before corsair came out with their maglev desktop fans)

Original non RGB
Speed
400 - 2400 RPM
Sound Level
37 dBA
Power Draw
0.225 A
Static Pressure
0.2 - 4.2 mm-H2O
Fan Airflow
75 CFM

Newer RGB version
Speed
400 - 1600 RPM
Sound Level
25 dBA
Power Draw
0.219 A
Static Pressure
1.78 mm-H2O
Fan Airflow
47.3 CFM

Also, on another note, i have the older Corsair RM850i, and they seem to gear the fans in their PSU to be as slow as possible, when in semi passive mode, the fan doesn't kick in until the PSU gets to like 45c at low load or until you hit around 40% to 60% load if the temperature is lower than that (the manual says 40% but i have noticed if my temp is 35c or less i can get above 50% load and still not have the fan kick in).

When the fan does kick in, it tends to be at 500rpm when at 60% load or so and only ramps up in speed to around 800RPM up until the PSU gets into the 40-45c range and stays there for a while.

The points the fan kicks in seems a little weird though, its not unusual for me to pull 450W on my 850W PSU and not have the fan come on at all, often it needs to hit around 500W before it does, which is weird because the manual says it should kick in at around 350W usage.

The highest RPM i have seen my PSU fan hit was 1150RPM back when i was running two GTX 980's in SLI with both heavily overclocked, power draw hit over 600W, could have been as high as 700W was a while ago cant really remember, this was before i had water cooling and the PSU sits in the top of my case, so it would get a lot of hot air rise up into it and when the fan kicked in it would just suck even more hot GPU air through it, it would steadily rise to around 45c with the PSU sitting at 800RPM, then when it got up to around 49c the fan would kick up to 1150RPM and the temperature would settle to around 45c and stay there.

Also when the load drops back down to idle and the temperature drops back down, the fan stays at 500rpm for quite a while before switching back to passive mode, longer than i could be bothered sitting around watching it to find out.

Not sure how much of these characteristics have carried over to the newer models, but if you are looking at getting the previous version (which a lot of places still have in stock) this is what you can expect from the RM850i previous version. Also the RMi series has a USB link with your PC so you can check power usage, fan speed, temperature e.t.c, you can also use the software to switch from multi rail to single rail, change the fan from hybrid to custom fan curve or static speed or full speed.
