Introduction

AOC CU34G2X Review
A 21:9 ultrawide monitor that is (relatively) budget-friendly

Ultrawide monitors are becoming more popular these days. In the PC world, the 21:9 aspect ratio indicates the resolutions of 2560×1080 (WFHD and 3440×1440 (WQHD). The latter is what we will be talking about today; we’re looking at the AOC CU34G2X monitor, introduced in August 2020. This isn’t the most recent display product around, but it deserves taking a look at.

The AOC CU34G2X is designed primarily for gamers (but it’s going to work well for video and web usage), and it’s offered at a reasonable price, with that MSRP set at 449 USD. The design is quite dynamic, with many red accents. It’s also worth mentioning that this monitor is much cheaper than what you would expect to pay for this kind of product in the past. So why would you want a display like that? Well, firstly, you should get better visibility in games than the standard 16:9 monitors provide. You also can’t forget about the other points that this monitor has to offer, like a 1440 pixels high resolution, 144 Hz refresh rate (the AOC CU34G2X supports AMD FreeSync with a 48-144 variable refresh rate range.), 1ms response time, and 4 USB ports (you can live without them, but if they’re there). The AOC CU34G2X is a 2K display that comes with all the possible features you can reasonably expect in a budget gaming monitor. The type of panel is VA, so the colors are not as consistent and vibrant as they are in IPS  monitors, so we don’t recommend this display for color-critical operations. There are also features like Picture-in-Picture (a small window on a large screen) and Picture-by-Picture (two screens side by side). The reviewed display has a 1500R curve, and that means it’s curved like a segment of a circle with a radius of 1500 mm, or 1.5 meters. The AOC CU34G2X is not listed as G-SYNC compatible. Although some non-certified monitors do work great with NVIDIA cards, this model, unfortunately, has some problems in that department. It features a rated brightness of 300 cd/m², and even though AOC’s product page doesn’t advertise the CU34G2X as an HDR monitor, it still supports HDR with HDR10 and an extended color gamut, but keep in mind that at 300 nits this it’s not really true HDR.

AOC  CU34G2X

AOC CU34G2X features:

  • 1 ms response time. The AOC CU34G2X is fully equipped with FreeSync Premium and a 144 Hz refresh rate
  • height-adjustable stand with tilt, swivel, and VESA mounting capabilities, a narrow bezel, and a sleek frameless design. Its thin bezel provides minimal distraction and pairs excellently with a multiple monitor set-up.
  • AOC’s latest Re-Spawned Warranty. It covers three years of general warranty, including a one-time accident warranty.

The panel is based on a VA matrix (Samsung panel) with a 34-inch diagonal. This frameless display with a 1500R curve comes with a WQHD resolution (3440×1440). AOC declares a factory color calibration (Delta E <2), with a rated brightness of 300 cd/m2 and 3000:1 contrast. The panel’s response time (GtG) is 1 ms. The AOC CU34G2X has two 1.2 DisplayPorts, two HDMI v2.0, a 3.5 mm headphone output, and a USB 3.2 Type-A hub.
