Posted by: Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 06/29/2016 03:00 PM [ 558 comment(s) ]

Join us as we review the new Radeon RX 480, we test the model fitted with 8GB. It's a graphics card series that will allow you to play your games in both the Full HD 1080P range as well as gaming in WQHD (2560x1440) range. And all that at a very reasonable price as well. See, the 4 GB variant will start selling for $199 whereas the price will be $239 for today's tested 8 GB model.

if you have an old or cheap motherboard (that may struggle with pcie-slot-power delivery) then

dont buy RX480, dont buy asus strix 960, dont buy 750ti.

buy all other amd or nvidia cards.

is this conclusion so hard to get to?

Sure, other than being wrong. :) Your other examples spike, they don't exceed (according to reports) the spec significantly continuously under load. There are zero reports of those GPU's you listed causing an issue on even the cheapest motherboard. At least, I could not find any.

Not even the same thing, sorry.

Your conclusion should just stick with RX 480, cause it's the only card that does what it does. Not even the Strix 960 problem comes close to RX 480.

Also, I must remind you there is no guarantee that damage won't be done to med to higher quality motherboards. It's actually more a matter of time.

A more honest conclusion for now is "Don't buy RX 480 full-stop" until these problems are rectified.

If the Rx 480 has some decent OC headroom, it will be in striking distance of the 1070, making the 1070 a terrible buy.

Also, these benchmarks don't even account for AMD's newly optimized GCN technology, so expect DirectX 12 improvements to be VERY NICE.

If the 480 does indeed OC better than Nvidia's 1070...man oh man does Nvidia have some issues to solve. I really feel AMD knew from the start that they would have better IPC improvements compared to Nvidia along with their better Dx12 efficiency in the most recent games...this 480 suddenly looks much more attractive than the 1070. Nevermind fanboys...this is good for all consumers regardless of your brand of loyalty.

AMD looks to have one of the best "Bang For Dollar" cards in recent history!!

The AIB's with 6+8 pin OC like crazy, you guys will see. I already seen what it can do. When OC, in "games" its in the 1070 area. Now think about AMD's IPC gains for GCN in DX12 games, it gets even more juicy.

I think a lot of people will be in awe how much these suckers can overclock, Even the 480 when overclocked is in striking distance of a 1070 stock clocks...Mark it down, AMD Shock & Awe incoming! The 480 and 470 are the best bang for buck cards in over a decade!! Again...the OC headroom is simply amazing. My older brother was at the two events a few weeks ago and AMD handed out some cards to those in the industry like my older brother. Although I can't say a whole lot..I can say with 100% certainty that the 480 OC's crazy on a reference. A few others that do have a 6 + 8 pin from a AIB partner say these cards are mind blowing in terms of overclockability.

Edit: reading some comments, Some people still in denial lol. Stop it, AMD has some kick butt cards coming out, give props where its due, No need to be immature about it.

Like i been saying for weeks now...the 480 is a monster overclocker that in games is close to a 1070. Game benchmarks will show this once these results start to trickle out in the coming days. Mark it down! People kept trying to compare the 480 to a 970 which was laughable to be frank.

I am still wondering where this guy is now?
