SuperSpeed+ Performance Tests

USB 3.1 SuperSpeed+ Performance Tests

So we have our hardware and software up and running. It is time for some testing. We use the aforementioned hardware with Windows 8.1 all patched up.

To get an idea of where we need to be we need to explain first that the fastest I have been able to get USB 3.0 was in the 350 to 400 MB/s range, with the Samsung T1 USB 3.0 storage unit (it has 850 EVO embeded). So our baseline really is, everything above 450 Mb/sec = win :)

Since we are not testing the storage unit itself, rather the fact that we are seeking maximum performance we'll keep things simple. We'll test the RAID0 SSD unit simply on the USB 3.0 (Intel) controller and then we test the unit on the Asmeda based USB 3.1 controller.

For testing we use software like CrystalDiskMark, AS-SSD and Atto, these software's you can download and install yourself easily as well to replicate a thing or two at home. Obviouslt for maximum performance you WILL need Windows 8.1, seriously that is highly recommended.

We start off with CrystalDiskMark :

Um yeah ... that doesn't suck eh ? At USB 3.0 you are looking at roughly 400 MB/sec bandwidth at best and with USB 3.1 we now reach 800 MB/sec. Even 512 kB block sizes show incredible performance increases.

With ATTO we see very similar results. Starting at 32kB the perf already jumps towards 500 Mb/sec, once we pass 512 kB block sizes we reach almost 800 MB/sec and everything after that passes 810 MB/sec. That is crazy stuff really.
