PC Gaming in UHD - Ultra High Definition - benchmarks review - The Ultra HD Monitor Monitor Monitor setup

Monitor setup

If you decide to purchase this monitor, you will need a Radeon 7000 or NVIDIA Kepler based graphics card. The monitor will defaults toward 30Hz and well, let me just say that's not exactly a lovely Windows experience. So we need to get 60Hz going and that will take some effort though with a wicked combination of video card drivers, monitor settings, and using the monitor connection.

To drive 60Hz native 3840x2160 you can either use a single DisplayPort 1.2 cable or two HDMI cables, here one rule applies, all HDMI cables should be connected to a single GPU. Now it is recommended to use DisplayPort 1.2 for ease of use. But since we'll be using FCAT as well, we can not take that route. Basically installation wise on DP it goes a little something like this:

NVIDIA GeForce Driver Setup

  • Install the latest 4K compatible driver (GeForce driver 327.19).
  • At the monitor OSD switch to MST mode 

You are set.

AMD Catalyst Driver Setup

Please update your AMD Catalyst software to the latest available (Catalyst 13.10 Beta driver). When connected the PQ321 to PC, it will default to 30Hz. The first step to changing that is to open up the On Screen Display (OSD) controls and select Setup > DisplayPort STREAM. Change this from SST (single stream transport) to MST (multi-stream transport), save the settings, and plug and pray while the monitor resets.

Once reset:

  • Open Catalyst Control Panel.
  • Expand the AMD Eyefinity Multi-Display option from the left-hand column, and select Create Eyefinity Display Group.
  • You'll see two square boxes labeled 1 and 2. Click on 1 and press Continue.
  • You now need to select a layout for the display group. Select the 2x1 configuration from the pull-down menu.
  • You are now set for 3840x2160

Remember, do setup the screen at 60Hz as it default to 30Hz. Now, for detailed instructions on how to configure the monitor on all three platforms (AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel's Haswell), ASUS put together a nice and handy video, which we've embedded below. Have a peek:
