Frame Experience Analysis - Multi GPU

Now I saved these two charts for last as I really had my doubts whether or not to insert it. As you guys know there has been a lot going on with frame pacing lately. If you have no clue what that is then please read this and this article.

Now frame pacing has improved massively ever since Catalyst 13.8 beta drivers. AMD open has stated that Ultra HD is not yet supported for frame pacing, only resolutions up-to 2560x1440 will benefit from frame pacing with the latest drivers. With that statement in mind I was a little reluctant to show you the charts below. Then again, it would not be good taste for a journalist to not show them. So here we go, and I have limited this towards to benchmark runs.

These are early days in the 4k world in general and in a few weeks’ time you’ll have a much better overall idea on the AMD GPUs for 4k solutions. Therefore the timing of this page article is not exactly ideal. I'm making this statement as I want to be open and fair to both AMD and NVIDIA about this.

Abobe Hitman Absolution. You'd almost miss it, but the green line in the back is GeForce GTX 780 SLI. And without frame pacing, AMD is showing a lot of frame latency bouncing up and down.

For Tomb Raider is gets even worse as we have obsolutely no clue what the framegrabber is seeing the first 13 seconds. Then something kicks in and up to the 24th second we see the expected frame latency bounding up and down.

I do want to note that what you see here is actually hard to see on the screen, but the thick results basically can be described as micro-stuttering (explained here). Let's hope AMD gets frame pacing under control with a driver release soon. Up-to then Ultra HD multi-GPU gaming on a GeForce platform honestly is a better choice as there is yet another problem with AMD which we'll talk about on the next page in the conclusion.
