The Callisto Protocol was released on December 2nd, a spiritual successor to the original Dead Space. The Callisto Protocol is a new addition to the horror-survival genre, where players are trapped on a space station and must battle their way through mutated enemies while uncovering the mystery behind their presence. The press has had a mixed reaction to the game, with opinions ranging from "high praise" to "big disappointment", where early reviews in various publications have been decidedly divided. As always, games are patched and get better once a few weeks have passed. The game's immersive atmosphere is achieved through creative lighting effects, many of which are pre-baked, and the highly detailed environments that are often based on relatively simple models. Graphically, The Callisto Protocol is captivating. The in-game characters and environments are incredibly detailed and among the most acceptable we've seen in a game. While it could benefit from further optimizations, it still looks impressive.
If you want all eye candy enabled, including Raytracing, then the game is demanding in terms of hardware requirements. To reach 60 frames per second (FPS) at 1080p Full HD resolution, a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, Radeon RX 6700 XT, or an RTX 2080 (Ti) is needed; with ray tracing disabled, you'll have some more leash. For 1440p gaming, RTX 3070 Ti or Radeon RX 6800 is necessary to achieve 50-60 FPS. And for 4K gaming, an RTX 4080 or better is required; currently, no available Radeon graphics card can hit 4K60 with raytracing enabled and maximum settings, though. As you have been able to see, Intel's ARC A770 would not kick in even slightly.
"The Callisto Protocol" Impresses with Stunning Graphics yet has High Hardware Demands
In conclusion, The Callisto Protocol has some optimization problems. But a long-awaited update is available. The shader compilation, as numerous readers in the forum affirm, significantly reduces stuttering; however, it is not yet a perfect solution. The Callisto Protocol can be played on the PC reasonably stutter-free however, frame pacing still shows pretty dreadful results. Some poorly optimized scenes can stress even high-end GPUs, leading to stutters during scripted events or while exploring the environment. On a positive note, the graphics of the game are exquisite. Hopefully, Striking Distance Studios will resolve these issues with further post-launch updates.
