NAS Settings and Storage Manager

There are other options as well. There’s a “drive health” segment, which includes S.M.A.R.T disk checking, bad block scanning, and even detailed SMART info.
Next up Is the RAID segment. It will still list whatever drives you to have. The option to create further RAIDs is also here, naturally. Apart from that, you can create virtual disks on installed drives. This has to be done in conjunction with creating an iSCSI target. All external drives connected via the rear two USB ports will show up in external storage (after a short delay).  As for the general settings, there’s a time region and zone, which can be configured automatically or manually. You can also manually set an NTP server to sync to, e.g. prod-ntp.domain.name. Then you can configure fan speed and HDD sleep settings (i.e. after a certain period, the installed drives will spin down, to save wear & tear). Even at max speed, the fans were barely audible. The power options are very useful because they allow the TNAS to automatically boot up after a power outage. You can also set automatic boot and power-off times here.

Next, we have notifications and alerts, with two different domains available (you can also test if it all works). SMTP servers are configurable as well, though for my purposes the default one worked just fine (as expected). SSL certificates can be downloaded, with a remote access link (if enabled) being accessible for a max of 70 days before expiring. Given that I did not have the device for long, I was unable to see if TOS would prompt for renewal of the remote access certificate. Firewall rules can be created here as well, with support for TCP/UDP/ICMP protocols and the naming of rules, with a simple reject/accept tick box system. Any additional security measures are welcome in 2020.

Remote access can be made safer by using the last option in 'security,' namely automatically blocking IPs that try to gain access remotely but fail to login too many times. You can even set a time limit to then unblock that IP from accessing the TNAS remotely (in case of user error, for example). Finally, there are options for the backup and recovery of your current TNAS configuration, as well as software updates for TOS. This is, by default, set to automatic. You can also restore your TNAS to default settings, though this will also reset the static IP it has (TOS advises you to use the Terra Master desktop app to retrieve the new IP).
