AMD Ryzen 3000 – 3rd Gen Rise of Ryzen

Welcome to a long-awaited preview, yes preview as on the 7th of the 7th the actual launch will commence. Ryzen 3000 series, formerly known under codename Matisse, is fabbed on 7nm with a new chiplet design. Ryzen has been a successful run for AMD ever since Ryzen the first generation was launched. Intel might still be having the advantage of faster per core frequencies, but their processors have had it rough with all security vulnerabilities and defacto that has been having an effect not just to their reputation, but also performance. AMD has been far less affected and that weird series of events is a fact. It is now the year 2019 and where AMD was close to absent for years in stores and retail, oh my how that changed.

During the release(s) of Ryzen generation one, a lot of people still waited to see AMD iron out the initial child-diseases like the initial memory compatibility issues and incredible difficult discussion about latency related issues. Over time, AMD was got up-to-snuff with proper memory support, and while Intel was and still is faster in super-high-end game performance due to their high Turbo clocks, a lot of you waited and sat things out as 7nm would be the fabrication node where all the difference should be found. We’re now in 2019, 7nm is working, AMD is seeing proper yields and as a result, Ryzen 3000 is here, and it is exciting offering them twice the density at half the power at roughly 1.25x the performance.

Especially gamers should be happy as the combination of increased IPC at 15% as well as increased Turbo frequencies will bring game performance up-to-snuff with the competition.

At CES and Computex AMD have been making a series of announcements on their processor platform, several procs, and the new X570 Chipset. We’ll first walk through all that new kit to get you an idea of what’s being released in the weeks to come, and of course, talk a bit more about the chiplet design and what that is all about.

Meet the new deck of processors:

  • 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X will be priced 749  USD
  • 12-core Ryzen 9 3900X will be priced 499 USD
  • 8-core Ryzen 7 3800X will be priced 399 USD
  • 8-core Ryzen 7 3700X will be priced 329 USD
  • 6-core Ryzen 5 3600X will be priced 249 USD
  • 6-core Ryzen 5 3600 will be priced 199 USD

AMD now has announced a full deck of first Ryzen 3000 processors with a spread of six to sixteen core products. Ryzen 3600 (X) with six cores and twelve threads, 3700(X) (8t/16t), 3800X (8c/16t) And Ryzen 9 3900X (12c/24t).  And that means silicon with two CPU dies immediately make the market. The IPC, by the way, should be up by almost 15% and even 25%  overall combined with the increase in clock frequency as some Ryzen models will get turbo bins towards 4.6 GHz. Pricing then, historically AMD has been at 40 to 50 USD per core, and as you have read above, that has not changed.

AMD at E3, however, announced one more processor, the Ryzen 9 3950X, a sixteen core part. Let's talk through the procs announced, shall we?
