Specifications & Features

Teamgroup is offering three versions of the Z340 (256GB, 512GB and 1TB). For endurance, our tested 1TB model has been rated at 1665 TBW. So if you write 25 GB each day for a year that's 9.125 TB per year. On that pace this SSD could last you 182 Years. The series will be fitted with TLC written 3D NAND flash memory (vertically stacked). This allows the company to offer the proper storage volumes.

So instead of using Planar NAND, 3D NAND is used. 3D TLC NAND is a physical vertical NAND cell stacking not to be confused with chip stacking in a multi-chip package. In 3D NAND, NAND layers, not chips, are stacked in a single IC. The good news is continued cost reduction, smaller die sizes and more capacity per NAND chip. Also, installed NAND toolsets in the wafer fabs can, for the most part, be reused, thereby extending the useful life of fab equipment. The Z340 series carries a slightly high price tag though, MSRP is 512GB/1TB $94.99 and $164.99, so that is 16 cents per GB for the 1TB model. This model is offered with a proper 5-year warranty (or number of TBW reached).

Phison PS5012-E12 controller

The SSD is making use of a PS5012-E12 controller from Phison. The PS5012-E12 makes use of the NVMe revision 1.3 protocol and as you have been able to notice from the SSD specifications, this controller is very fast across its four PCIs for read and write operations respectively, over an x4 PCIe Gen 3 lane connection that is. Now the shocker, for 4K random read and write operations, the controller is able to perform up to 600,000 operations per second (IOPS) as it (can) makes use of 8 NAND channels.  It is compatible with QLC and 96-layer NAND. The controller offers support for up to 8 TB storage as well as offering support for external Thunderbolt 3 SSDs. The PS5012-E12 is available in three versions: the 'normal' PS5012-E12 for high-end SSDs, the PS5012-E12C for mid-range devices, and the PS5012-E12DC for the business market.
