Here we go, the USB 3.0 Samsung T1, we received the 500 GB model. The internal SSD that Samsung uses is sharing a lot of the 850 EVO DNA.  It's average power usage is only 2 Watt hence it will not need an external power source. The device will power itself completely from the USB connector. Pricing wise you are looking at these SRP prices, shave off another 10% depending on your region and actual street prices of course.

  • 250GB £136.99 - 180 EUR - 199 USD
  • 500GB £228.99 - 299 EUR - 339 USD
  • 1024GB £456.99 - 599 EUR - 679 USD

The storage device is rated at a blistering 450MB/sec for reads and writes (sustained) over USB 3.0 (Windows 8 needed for the fastest transfer numbers), and that is comparable with modern age SSD and NAND Flash storage, for our purposes it'll do just fine alright ! Included are a small manual and USB 3.0 cable. It's all you need really.

The design of unit is slim -- 9.2mm thickness my man, that isn't a lot for a portable SSD storage unit, you can slip it into your jacket easily as it's length is only 7 CM.

Innards

Now I had a rather hard time opening up the unit, and did not want to damage it, so above a photo supplied by Samsung. The SSD can be opened up and shows a small size PCB. The storage unit is in fact a mSATA SSD connector to a smaller PCB with a USB 3.0 Host controller.  This 5 Gbps storage unit makes use of Samsung's own MLC 3D-V-NAND. A total of just four NAND flash memory ICs can be spotted on the PCB for the entire 500 GB. The NAND FLASH partitions are assigned directly to the controller. As stated, the NAND used is the new 3D V-NAND in architecture where memory cells are stacked and this way they can put more of them in a chip. These ICs are based on 32 layer 3D V-NAND. An interesting fact is that the power consumption of the Samsung SSD is low with an IDLE rating of 2 mWatts and roughly 3~4 Watts when active.

The unit has a size of 71.0 x 9.2 x 53.2 mm, with a weight of 30 grams only. This puppy is shock resistant up to 1500G/0.5ms and features Dynamic Thermal Guard, which will activate in extreme temperature conditions to protect the drive and any stored data. This thing is TINY.
