Age/Occupation/Location?

I am 16, a student at high school and live in Norwich , England.

How long have you been a member of Guru3D forums?

6th December 2004 to find out about the AMD FX 55 and ask some questions about it.

What did you first come here for?

Geforce 6800 GT Reviews because my old system had a Geforce 6800GT.

What do you mainly use the system for?

I use my computer for gaming, I love playing Doom 3 and Half Life2 can’t wait to enjoy fear, also I use it for music editing.I also use this rig to edit music and videos.

How much did you spend on the rig?

About £2200 to date, not including and extras just the base unit.

How often do you update/buy a new rig?

Upgrade every year but a new computer comes around every few years cause I am not loaded enough to buy every year which I would like to do.

What components are used?

  • AMD FX 55 @ 2.8Ghz 35c Idle Temperature
  • 2Gb DDR 3200 (4x512mb Sticks)
  • Geforce 7800GTX 256Mb Version @ 510/1350 At 36c Idle
  • 160Gb Western Digital (80Gb WD 7200rpm X 2 in Nvidia Stripe Raid (0)
  • Windows Media Center 2005 SP2 + Remote
  • Creative Audigy 2 ZS Pro 6.1 Version
  • Asus SLI Deluxe Motherboard
  • Hp DVD RW Dual Layer
  • 3x 120MM fans
  • Artic 600Watt PSU Silent
  • 17” Flatron M1710A Monitor 8m/s
  • Creative T7900 Speakers 7.1 (Running @ 6.1)

Why ATI or NVIDIA, why Intel/AMD?

Well my last setup was a Intel P4 3.2Ghz the Northwood chip and it seem to lag behind the AMD 64 3000+ in my laptop so it gave me a idea on how Intel performed compared to 1.8ghz AMD 64 Mobile.

With NVIDIA ever since the TNT II (My first video card) I have been a fan and I have had every generation except for geforce 3, since. I also once had a ATi X800 Pro and XT PE but they where awful compared to the Geforce 6 / 7 series.

Does the system work as expected?

Yeah pretty much it’s an amazing machine for loading times, and visuals always make my mate jealous. I love playing all my games on it, can’t beat it.

What's the best part of your rig?

FX55 definitely, had it since December last year and its still going strong.

What sucks and should not have been bought?

My sound card is the worse thing, but I am getting a new one soon.

Modified cases/video cards/other?

Well my Watercooling was only done about a month ago; I have used sponges as sound proofing. (Don’t laugh guys), basically my radiator sits at the front out of view. The hardest bit most definitely was the pump and reservoir placement.

3DMark scores?

3D Mark 05 : 9029
3D Mark 03: 18396 (CPU @ 2.7Ghz For That Run)

Future Upgrades?

Well I got my eye on one of those new creative cards the X-Fi Fatality reviewed at Guru3D.They look very smart and I will be able to use full 7.1 surround sound. Also like the look of the new 512 cards, never know might purchase an X1800 if NVIDIA don’t do something about that steep pricing. But that will be next year most probably and with a nice 24” widescreen monitor.
