So, some photo's then, below you can see the reference Radeon HD 7990 GHz edition card, this is a 6GB (2x3GB) model. We expect the product to retail for roughly 949 EUR or 999 USD (MSRP) in the initial launch phase with availability starting in May 2013.
The card certainly looks different from the Radon HD 6990 with the new cooling design. The theme remains the same though, a familiar looking nice and dark/red card with what you may expect from AMD slash ATI. The 28nm Tahiti XT2 based GPUs are tied to 3GB GDDR5 graphics memory running at 6 Gbps. The reference Radeon HD 7990 cards will get clocked at a 950/1000 MHz Core and Boost frequency.
Here we can see the card and its three low RPM fans, AMD is using three to create more airflow at low RPM. This results into a fairly silent product whilst keeping temperatures at roughly 80 Degrees C on both the GPUs. As you can observe, the card is lengthy though as its 31cm / 12 inches in length.
As always in the enthusiast range, AMD allows you to opt for multi-GPU functionality with Crossfire(X) as an option. You can pair one extra 7990 in your PC and have them do a decent workout. If you peek to the right of the Crossfire connector on the photo you'll notice a switch, it's actually a Dual BIOS toggle switch. Setting two returns the card to factory default, default setting 1 is an unprotected mode which allows you to overclock and tweak as well.
The reference R7990 has a maximum power consumption of roughly 375 Watts, our measurements actually show numbers above that value but we'll address that later in the article.
We test and review the PowerColor Radeon HD 7850 SCS3 today. This stock clocked Radeon HD 7850 is cooled passively, meaning it has no fans tool it down. That also means it's rather silent as it does not make any noise. But what about temperatures then you must be wondering ?
