Point of View Protab 2 XXL Tablet review - Hardware

Hardware

For the ProTab2XXL tablet Point of View pursued the popular ARM Cortex A8 microprocessor running at 1.0 GHz . And for your daily usage like web browsing and the majority of apps that is good enough. The tablet as such feels reasonably fast and responsive. The downside which you already noticed of course is that the product comes with Android 2.3, and that indicates a little that the hardware is not Honeycomb compatible, which has hardware acceleration on several fronts.

Point of View TabletInterestingly enough there is a small co-processor available on the product offering playback of high definition video and other multimedia functionalities. Games, video and even the display of website with Adobe Flash are managed though a small Mali 400 co-processor. Mali is an 4.7mm2 ARM family of Graphics Processing Units, multi-core(four) actually. It supports the OpenGL ES 2.0 open standard for advanced embedded graphics as well.  It also offers support for the OpenVG 1.1, and OpenGL ES 1.1, in common with all other ARM Mali GPUs.

The screen: for a 170 EUR product it is fascinating to see a nice big 10 inch screen with a decent 1024 x 600 resolution. Obviously 1024 x800 would have been preferred here, but yeah that's cost control. The touch screen is capacitive, meaning that is a type of touch screen which consists of an insulator coated with a transparent conductor. Point of View states that it is a 5-point touch screen.

The LCD quality overall is reasonable at best. The screen is bright enough, though you'll need the entire backlight lit in daylight conditions. The colors look okay for this TN screen, but the biggest problem is your viewing angle. Looking directly at the screen offers good quality, tilt the device a few degrees and you'll already notice a different saturations and colors. I'll keep repeating this though, it's stuff you can expect for a sub 175 EUR tablet. There will be compromises to make ...

For the freaks: A single core Mali-400 MP has 32kB L2 cache, runs 395MHz  in performance (variable) mode and can manage 30M tri/s 275Mpix/s to1.1Gpix/s @ 275MHz. Oh, and it has a die area of 4.7mm2.

When we move away from the core processors we stumble into the fact that 3G is not supported, neither did we find an onboard GPS, which is definitely a miss alright.

For you connectivity you rely on WIFI, the implementation is good with all supported 802.11 b/g/n standard. The range was quite okay as well, from a WIFI router in my living room within a 20 meter range there where no connectivity issues, and my house is cluttered with signals.

Memory wise you'll get 512MB DDR3 work memory, that as well is on the low side as 1 GB is the standard these days. For storage you'll have 4GB embedded, expandable with a MicroSD card of course.

Point of View Protab 2 XXL Tablet review
Today a review on the ProTAB 2 XXL 10" tablet from Point of View from their Mobi range. With a price of only 169,- EUR the specs are decent enough alright. Interesting enough for graphics, the ProTab2XXL also comes with an additional MALI-400 3D graphics chip. Now we never heard of it before tbh, and very little can found about it on the web. But we can certainly measure it's performance and it does allow for FullHD playback. The Mali graphics chip even allows to drive a mini HDMI v1.4 port.

Point of View GTX 570 TGT Ultra Charged review
Today's offering is of course a GTX 570, we nicked it out of the Eindhoven warehouse from the good people at Point of View. See, their TGT team is chunking out several new SKUs based on the GTX 570. Today we'll have a peek at their Ultra Charged model. The UC version is a guaranteed stable factory overclocked product that is overclocked towards a pretty impressive value. See, the default core clock frequency of the GTX 570 is 732 MHz, the TC version is clocked at a blistering 810 MHz, which is a pretty decent overclock. Memory wise spot an increased clock frequency on that 1.2 GB GDDR5 memory as well, taken from 3800 towards 3960 MHz.

Point of View Ion 330 motherboard review
We test an ION 330 based motherboard - ION is a relatively low cost GPU assisted solution that will allow this industry on very short notice to have netbooks with full HD playback quality, in multi-channel HD audio. A solution that even supports CUDA and therefore some simple PhysX functionality, but since it's CUDA compatible, it'll also allow encoding and acceleration of popular video content. A platform that supports Gigabit Ethernet, dual-link DVI (high resolution monitors), acceleration in Photoshop CS4 and heck... you can even play a couple of games or make a mini HTPC out of it, it's just really interesting as the product might be little, yet offers a lot.

GeForce 9600 GSO 384 MB review | Point of View
NVIDIA replaced the GeForce 8800 GS with the GeForce 9600 GSO. The 9600 GSO is still based on the same G92 core with 96 stream processors that the 8800 GS has, but NVIDIA gave card makers a bit more freedom in their designs in terms of own PCB design to and determine their own clocks. This 'old' card will still have 384 MB of GDDR3 memory over a weird 192-bit memory interface. Cards like these will sell for less than 99 Euro, and considering the performance you get returned for that, you'll love it.
