So once we remove four screws we notice the M.2. SSD hidden under the massive heatsink. The heatsink surface area hardly even touches the NAND, so it's there for aesthetics reasons mostly.
Here we can see the M2 PCB a little better and see the model 9183 Marvell controller. With these you get the full TRIM support and Garbage collection under Windows 7/8 or deleting files off of, will result in LBAs being TRIMed.
As you can see the M.2. card is nothing more than a standalone SSD unit connected to a simple PCIe card to make it work on existing motherboards.
Plextor is making use of some very sweet 19nm Toshiba NAND flash ICs, asynchronous MLC. There is also a DRAM cache of 512MB present on this SSD, btw.
