Phanteks EVOLV X review -
Product showcase – exterior
The Phanteks Evolv X looks very attractive, with the silver colour and aluminium finish. There is also a black and grey variant. All of this gives the case a premium product feel.
To open the side panels you need to unfasten them (thumbscrews are used for this purpose), starting by taking off the front panel. The panels are secured with two thumbscrews on each side.
When unscrewed and opened, the panels don’t fall down, because they are secured with the hinges.
Out of the box, the Evolv X offers four HDD cages beneath the PSU shroud and six places for mounting SSDs. With additional HDD/SSD cages you can reach a total of 10 HDDs (4 in the PSU shroud, 6 in the main compartment), and 9 SSDs in your system. That’s really a lot! There is no place for 5.25" drives, as most users seem to consider optical units a thing of the past (and you can always plug in an external device via USB). Regarding water cooling, the Evolv X is intended primarily for that kind of set-up, with support for 420 mm radiators in the front and 360 mm on the top, as well as a 140 mm radiator in the rear. You can install up to three 120/140 mm fans in the front and three 120/2x140 on the top, as well as a single 120/140 fan in the rear. The bottom can be easily removed, by pulling it out towards the rear of the chassis.
The front takes a bit more of an effort to remove, as you need to take off the front cover first, and then unfasten the filter.
While in this area, we can check the clearance between the fan filter and the front panel. According to Phanteks, it’s supposed to be 30 mm, and in this is actually accurate information, as you can see in the pic.
Ok, time for the best part: the interior.
