Specifications and Features

So the weird thing with SATA2 was that we've been shouting for years  that the SATA2 controller was a massive bottleneck, interestingly enough we are facing the same challenges already for SATA3 as we've reached that threshold in performance. The 20nm NAND flash uses comes from IMFT. IM Flash Technologies (IMFT) by the way is a joint venture of Micron Technology and Intel.

Features

  • SATA 3.0 6Gbps interface
  • Proprietary Barefoot 3 M10 controller
  • 20nm IMFT MLC NAND flash
  • 2.5-inch 7mm (slim) form factor
  • 128GB, 256GB and 512 GB capacities
  • Advanced suite of flash management
  • High performance non-compression loss of usable capacity
  • Bundled with Acronis cloning software
  • 256-bit AES data encryption
  • Support for TRIM
  • Lower Power consumption IDLE 0.9W / Active 2.25W

Passing 500 MB/sec performance really is something you won't hear us complaining about. The OCZ Vertex 450 is an SSD based on Synchronous MLC NAND flash memory made on a 20nm fabrication process. The end result here is that you'll get a storage unit with a sweet IO performance, peaking up-to 540 MB/sec in read performance and a scorching 530 MB/sec write performance. This number varies a bit depending on the NAND volume size though.

The Indilinx Barefoot 3 M10 controller

New in the Vertex series is the Barefoot 3 controller, similar to the one used in the Vector series. The 20nm IMFT ONFi NAND flash memory is tied towards Barefoot 3 controller located. This is an 8-channel NAND flash controller and the third revision from Indilinx, it comes with an all to familiar dual-core ARM architecture.

Barefoot3_diagram

The Barefoot 3 controller makes used of pretty big memory partitions for caching, that means that internal DDR3 memory is used and physically placed onto the PCB being used as file and data caches. The Vertex 450 has 512MB of cache divided over two 256MB ICs from Micron.

Over the SATA3 / SATA 6 Gb/s interface you may expect read speeds up to 550 MB/s and writes up to 530 MB/s based on volume size of the SSD. Both the 256GMB and 512GB model will have these performance numbers. The 128GB model will however have less write performance at 300 MB/sec. All these models have an advertised 4K random IOPS rating in-between 80,000 random read and 90,000 random write (4K aligned).
