SSD Performance Linear and Random READ and WRITE

SSD Performance Linear and Random READ and WRITE

OCZ Vertex SSD review

So this is a new test I am introducing. Linear and random read/write performance. On this page I feel is the best of all the tests we are showing you in this review. In the screenshot above you can observe a nearly scientifically precise measurement of linear read performance. Try to imagine reading/copying a HUGE DVD. As you can see the performance is flabbergasting. We top out at 240 MB/sec.

Once we start to read and copy files from the SSD in a random fashion we expected slightly less performance. It's still horribly good though, hitting close to 250 MB/sec and 211 MB/sec on average... that's right, I said average.

Linear write performance then. Imagine copying a DVD to the SSD here. That is fairly astonishing really, 169 MB/sec on average. Only after 7-8 minutes of continued writing do we see a drop in performance, but really, at it's lowest point that is 120 MB/sec. Write performance peaked at 224 MB/sec, which is way above advertised performance.

Once we start to randomly write stuff all over the drive (see it as several software programs trashing the SSD by all writing at once) we see a really significant drop in performance. Still, on average we get 120MB/sec, but sure... in the long run performance will cave in towards 55 MB/sec.
