Final Words & Conclusion

Final Words & Conclusion

The MSI RadiX AXE6600 router is designed with numerous features and a user-friendly interface for easy management. Its performance on the 6GHz/6E band is exceptional, but its 5 GHz performance is average at best. The router's legacy 802.11n performance is subpar. For users aiming for 6 GHz, this router is a suitable option. One of its standout features is its 2.5Gbit port and USB 3.0 connectivity, enabling comprehensive storage-sharing support. It is compatible with various sharing methods, including Windows fileshare, DLNA, FTP, and BitTorrent repository, making it a practical feature. The router's modern and clean user interface offers free features that others may charge for. It also has a USB port that can be set up as a media server, while the 2.5 GigE WAN port is ideal for internet connections up to 1.5/1.5 Gbps. The router's graphical user interface is commendable. The router features a variety of ports that provide specific functionality not present on lower-end routers. To begin, there are four Gigabit local area network (LAN) ports then on 2.5 GigE wide area network (WAN) por which offers flexibility and is meant to give data delivered over this port 'first priority.'

One point worth mentioning is energy consumption. The device does deliver very reasonable energy consumption. Expect 10~11 Watts of power use under typical idle/moderate workloads. Given that these are always-on devices, we recommend turning off RGB to save a few watts.

Performance

The WiFi range for the AX 5 GHz band on this router is average; the 6GHz performance, however, is excellent. Overall in the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands it provides coverage throughout the entire house. It allows for uninterrupted streaming of Ultra HD content on a Smart TV. However, the range is not substantially better than other MIMO Multi-band AC routers from brands like D-Link, Netgear, and TP-Link. Nevertheless, the router justifies its higher cost with its regular firmware updates, which are crucial for security. It would be good to see an automated firmware update feature, however. The admin interface is very user-friendly and includes advanced network settings, the GUI design is great. In addition, the router has a USB3 port that enables the creation of a UPnP / SAMBA network share with external storage. One drawback is that the 2400 MHz band does not reach the same high speeds as other routers, maxing out at 100 Mbit/s while others reach 150~250 Mbit/s. The Multi-Gigabit option for a wired connection is a standout feature, it would have been nice to see 2x 2.5 GigE connections, though.

Concluding

For gamers looking to improve their online gaming experience, the MSI Radix AXE6600 WiFi 6E Tri-Band Gaming Router is a viable option, especially for those with gaming devices that can connect to the speedy 6GHz band. The Radix also provides high-speed wired networking through its 2.5Gbps WAN/LAN port, as well as robust controls and cool lighting effects. This router boasts the most advanced standards, with a theoretical ceiling of 4804 Mbps for devices with four transmit/receive antennas with 1024-QAM and 160 MHz higher-order modulation. We conducted tests on a based on a Multi-Gigabit network and found that the 6 GHz wireless connection offers the same performance as a single 1 Gigabit Ethernet port at roughly 7 meters distance though a wall. However, compared to other Wi-Fi 6E routers, its performance during testing was lacklustre but good enough on the 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands. I'll tag those bands as mainstream performance, where the 6 GHz performance was really excellent. The router's design is striking, and the colored antennas may attract the attention of gamers. The feature that allows users to switch QoS modes without accessing the management interface could be a convenient addition. Despite not being a well-known brand for networking equipment, the RadiX AXE6600 by MSI is a router that offers WiFi 6E support and gaming QoS features that are easy to use. However, there are areas for improvement regarding the 2.4 and 5 GHz band performance. Let's hope a firmware update can improve a bit on that.
