MSI R7970 Lightning

Once the cooler is removed we can see the intriguing and complex PCB design. MSI used Military qualified III selected components. I And I know it is a heap of marketing, but make no mistake, these components follow MIL-STD-810G standards for duration. The board has CopperMOS chips for power delivery. Also seen on previous boards are the Hi-C Caps (aka Tantalum Capacitors).

New however are Golden Solid State Chokes, these actually are gold plated SSCs, supposedly for better heat dispersion and anti-corrosion purposes. Dr. Evils 'GOOOOOOOLD' continuously is in my mind now.

So the idea behind this is that solid ferrite chokes will oxidize over time and thus can cost performance. It also supposedly increases current handling by about 10%.

We spot a secondary new component on the PCB though, Dark Solid Capacitor -- aluminum core solid caps with a nickel-plated cover. This promises a longer lifespan as well as lower ESR (equivalent series resistance- lower temperature and a higher efficiency).

If we flip the cooler upside down we get a better idea of what is going on under the hood. Two 10 cm fans generate massive airflow for heat dissipation while remaining silent (at it's default clocks) The two form-in-one heat sinks improve cooling for memory and the power supply module as well ensure structural integrity. The heatpipes are all 8mm thick.

New is Dust Removal Technology. Fans are running in reverse for 30 seconds after booting to remove dust from the heat sinks.
